The Rev Susan Askey led the family communion service for Trinity Sunday at St John’s Church. Helen Bentley gave the address based on John chapter 16 “Embracing God in all three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit”. Prayers were led by Anne Crosland. Sunday Club joined the service and acted a story about helping others. Ann Norton was the organist.

MARSDEN

Sunday morning worship at the United Church was led by the Rev Ann Cherrad and took the form of a Songs of Praise service. Members of the congregation were asked for their favourite hymn and to say a few words why it was chosen. A very enjoyable Songs of Praise followed. The minister gave a short reading and led prayers of intercession. Refreshments afterwards were served by Irin Galloway and Angela Kinder. Marjorie Boothroyd was the organist and arranged all the hymns.

Trinity Sunday was celebrated at St. Bartholomew’s with a procession and service of Sung Eucharist, led by the vicar, the Rev Geoff Garside, who preached the sermon and led the prayers of intercession. Geoffrey Holroyd, Lay Reader, read the Gospel from John 16 verses 12-15. The lessons from Proverbs 8 verses 1-4, 22-31 and Romans 5 verses 1-5 were read by Carolyn Hansom. The organist was Jon Robinson with music group Richard Webb and Elizabeth Foden. Sideswomen were Susan Everill and Jean Pennington. Coffee was served by Joan Bradbury, Mabel Smithies, Evelyn Laidlaw and Glenys Ward.

Today’s service is at 9.30am in the Lady Chapel.

MILNSBRIDGE

At Milnsbridge Christadelphians’ the coffee morning reading group met on Tuesday morning to read and discuss the Bible readings for the day.

On Wednesday evening James Walker spoke about Dan – The Lost Tribe, which was the third in a series of talks on the 12 tribes of Israel .

The Sunday services were taken by Kevin Charlesworth. The speaker for the day was Karam Ram from Tamworth, whose subject at the evening talk was The Economics Of The Future.

The meetings planned for the coming week include the Bible class on Wednesday May 29 at 7.30pm, when the subject will be “The danger of riches.” On Sunday June 2 at 6pm the talk will be “The day that the earth shook.”Visitors are most welcome to come along to meetings and services.

PARKWOOD

A drop-in lunch was held at Parkwood Methodist Church on Wednesday, organised by Freda Lloyd, assisted by ladies of the church.

Marion Lloyd welcomed the congregation to the Methodist Church on Sunday morning. Preacher was Naomi Sharp and pianist Claire Middleton. Coffee was served after the service by ladies of the church.

SLAITHWAITE

Owing to the absence of the scheduled speaker at Slaithwaite Good Companions, Margaret Cook organised two quizzes that were much enjoyed. Members’ brains were working and there was plenty of humour. She was thanked by Pat and Margaret was also the pianist.

St James’ Parish Church family service and Holy Communion for Trinity Sunday, service led by Rev Robin Townsend, assisted by Raymond Denton. The children’s activity was led by Lynn Clegg, on the theme “working together”, which included putting a duvet into its cover. The Holy Gospel, Luke chapter 8 from verse 22, “Jesus Calms a Storm” was read by Rev Robin and his address on the Trinity with different representations. He also had four ladies to illustrate an idea of God and how they see him. Gloria drew his face, Cynthia three hearts for love, Pat Bowden the sun which warms and lights our lives and Val an eye to watch over us. Prayers were also read by Rev Robin with the little ones, then there was the celebration of the Eucharist. The organist was Alvi Whitehead.

The Methodist Bible Study Group met on Monday evening, Errol Salvesson led the group who read and studied verses from chapters 2 and 3 from Mark’s Gospel.

On Tuesday evening church members and friends met for film night. Housewives 49, starring Victoria Wood, was the film shown. The evening had been organised by Jennifer Twycroft.

The May Ecumenical service was held at the Holy Family Church and was led by Deacon Andrew Phillips. There were readings from Galatians and John and Deacon Andrew spoke about the joys of Pentecost.

The Women’s Fellowship met on Tuesday afternoon. Bessie Whitwam was in the chair and she read a Helen Steiner Rice poem on friendship before leading the meeting in prayer. The Rev Mike Smith was the speaker and he had brought along a selection of foods that would have been eaten in biblical times, as well as a copy of a Roman cookery book and cooking utensils. The Rev Smith was also the pianist for the afternoon.

Barbara Svensgaard and Wendy Blackburn organised a plant sale and bring and buy on Saturday morning, and raised the sum of £805.

The Rev Jo Archer-Siddal led Sunday morning worship, which continuing the theme of play. Her sermon was based on climbing frames and benches with a reading from Matthew’s Gospel of the talents. The organist was Wendy Redfearn.
