On Sunday, Janice Swallow welcomed the Rev Pam Ward who led the Gift Day Family Service at Providence Methodist Church. The theme was A Gift. Margaret Israel was the organist, and Bible readings were by Mrs Janice Swallow and Rev Pam Ward.

The Christmas Tree Festival will be December 7-9 (Friday 6-8pm, Saturday 9.30-4, Sunday service 10.30am, Memorial Service 3pm). Children can have breakfast with Santa on Saturday 9-11am Adults: Christmas Gift stall, cakes & food served. All welcome.

The Rev Harry Gwinnett led a celebration service for the completed church re-ordering at St John's . He welcomed the family of Nancy May Joan who was baptised . Prayers were led by Sunday Club and Youth, who also a performed a modern day version of the Good Samaritan. Sue McLellan thanked recently retired Rev Canon Martin Crompton, and curate the Rev Harry Gwinnett, church warden Helen Davies and Jeremy Cuss for valuable contributions. Music was provided by Ann Norton piano, Helen Davies guitar, Gail Smith clarinet, and Judas Cruickshank saxophone. The service was followed by lunch, organised by Michele and Rev Harry Gwinnett. In the afternoon a Come and Sing or Come and Hear Messiah was performed by an augmented choir. The soloists were Anna Trent soprano, Emily Reeves contralto, Ian Henderson tenor, Glen Cannon baritone, Denise Dransfield trumpet, and George Marsden was the organist. Margaret Laycock was the conductor. A collection was for the church’s help in supporting ongoing work in Mara, Essenye.

LINTHWAITE

The Methodist Church welcomed the first Sunday in Advent with the lightening of the first candle – Light For Life – by Rev Jo Archer-Siddall and family After reading from Isaiah, Rev Jo spoke about how Advent invites us to reflect on our lives. In the afternoon Junior Church held its Christmas party.

On Sunday at 9.30am, Sunday School prizegiving will be held, along with the dedication of toys that young people give to those less fortunate than themselves. The charity chosen is the Victim Support Group, Huddersfield who look after young people who have suffered from abuse within their families.

David Brierley was the speaker at the Methodist Church Thursday Fellowship on a holiday in Peru, Ecuador and Galapagos. He was thanked by chairlady Jan Widdop. Jenny Sutherland was pianist and refreshments were prepared by Molly Shepherd and Margaret Tennant. The last meeting of the year will be on Thursday when Kimm Brooke from Holmfirth will be the speaker.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Kirklees Councillor David and Karen Ridgway were guests at Linthwaite Methodist Young Players production of Peter Pan. The Players have a wealth of talent within the players from teenagers through to four-year-olds. Special mention must be made of Maxx Taylor who inspired and led younger children who now want to grow up and be pirates!

MARSDEN

Advent Sunday service at the United Church was led by Rev Debbie Hopkinson and included Holy Communion. Rachel Hemmingway lit the Advent candle, Bryan Cowgill read the bible, the organist was Marjorie Boothroyd. Refreshments were served by Carrie Hackett and Kathleen Jackson.

Advent Sunday was celebrated at St. Bartholomew’s with a Family Service and Baptism, led by the All Age Worship Team. Alison Fisher welcomed everyone. David Corps gave a talk about the Advent candles and their meaning and the first one was lit by Amy Hansom. David Fisher gave an illustrated talk about the messages that Advent and Baptism give us. The Gospel reading from St Luke was by Carolyn Hansom. The Rev. Geoff Garside baptised Mollie, Thomas and Jake. Prayers were led by Alison Gibson. The music was by the children and the newly formed Music group. John Wilson was the organist. Sideswomen were Jean Pennington, Joan Ladbrooke and Mary Horn. Coffee was served by Noreen Carr and Audrey Armitage. Holy Communion followed.

MILNSBRIDGE

Milnsbridge Christadelphians Bible class on Wednesday was led by David McEvoy. The speaker was Andrew Walker from Doncaster on John’s first epistle. Sunday services were led by Andrew Wilkinson, with Sarah Barrett playing the organ. The afternoon talk was given by David McEvoy. There was a church tea, followed by a Sunday school presentation – The gospel in stories. The 30 children from the Sunday school gave a magnificent performance. The evening concluded with thoughts from Darren Guy from Halifax, who distributed Sunday school prizes.

On Tuesday at 10.30 the coffee morning Bible reading group will meet. On Tuesday evening at 7.30pm there will be a special Sister’s class celebration- “ Call his name Jesus.” On Wednesday at 7.30pm the subject at the Bible class is “lay aside every weight.” The subject for the Sunday evening talk at 6pm is on “ The unexpected return of Jesus.”

SLAITHWAITE

The Wesley Guild met on Thursday. Gordon Ellis was in the chair and opened with a meditation from Eddie Askew. He introduced Diana and Ian Hogley of Birchencliffe, who gave an instructive talk with slides of their long association with the Riziki Children’s Home in Kenya.

On Saturday as part of the lights switch on, the Methodist Church served refreshments during the afternoon. Wendy Blackburn organised a Christmas card competition, and winners were: aged 4-7 Katie (Linthwaite Rainbows), 8-11 Charlie Toomes and Stuart Ballard, 12-16 Tillie Toomes, adults - Pauline Gee. Sunday morning service was led by Rev Jo Archer Siddall. The first advent candle was lit and Dawn Dyson read the Advent prayer. Wendy Redfearn was organist.

Secretary Maureen Weaving arranged three seasonal floral displays for Slaithwaite Good Companions. She was introduced and thanked by Hilary Ellis.

St James Parish Church was opened for its Christmas Tree festival with various stalls in the church lounge; food was served throughout the day. Story-telling, a choir, and Wilberlee School drummers entertained.
