GOLCAR

Mr S Culpan led the devotion at the Men's Fellowship and welcomed Mrs Yvonne Grange who gave a talk and film show on the Tyrol and Oberammagau.

Mrs Sheila Pearson welcomed the congregation and the preacher Mrs G Barraclough to Providence Methodist Church, Golcar, for Sunday service. The reading was taken from Jeremiah, chapter 18 verses 1-6, read by Mrs Nancy Meadows. Mrs Margaret Israel was the organist.

Next Saturday October 20, Providence Methodist is to hold a Coffee Day at Holmfirth Parish Church between 10am to 4pm. Lunches will also be available and there will be a sale of books and bric-a-brac. All welcome.

LINTHWAITE

Linthwaite Methodist Church celebrated their Harvest Festival when the great storyteller Steven Bagshaw led worship. Steve was assisted by his sons Ewan and David who read and enacted Matthew 13 verses 44-46 - Hidden Treasure – and Steve read from Matthew 7 verses 24-27 - The Wise and Foolish Builders. The theme of the Service was 'having a good foundation and giving your all'. In lieu of giving fruit and vegetables, members of the congregation gave gifts of money for the Welcome Centre Immediate Needs. Nearly 60 members of the congregation stopped after the service to enjoy a full English breakfast.

MARSDEN

Mrs Susan M Burton led the annual Jazz Service at the United Church, Marsden on Sunday morning. Music was provided by Winston’s Pennine Jazz Band with vocals by Terrie Shaltiel. Tea and coffee were served after the service.

The Dedication Festival was celebrated at St Bartholomew's on Sunday with a procession and a service of Sung Eucharist led by the vicar, the Rev Geoff Garside, who also preached the sermon. Prayers were led by Joan Biggs who also read the Gospel from John 10 verses 22-29. The lessons from Genesis 28 verses 11-18 and 1 Peter 2 verses 1-10 were read by Betty Hollinberry. John Wilson was the organist. Sideswomen were Pat Purcell and Jean Pennington.

During Jazz Weekend, the church was open all weekend. On Saturday there was a concert by Unity Voices and organ music by Dennis Brook. Refreshments and stalls were housed in the hall.

On Saturday evening there was a sell out concert in the hall featuring Magdalena Reising and the Blue Cafe Jazz.

Between Tuesday October 30 and Saturday November 3 the Church Operatic Society presents the musical High Society in the hall at 7.30pm. Tickets, priced £9 are available from Duncan's, Hairdresser, Warehouse Hill, Marsden, telephone 845311 (during shop hours only)

MILNSBRIDGE

Milnsbridge Christadelphians’ coffee morning reading group met at 10.30am on Tuesday morning. The Bible readings for the day, from 1 Chronicles chapter 26, Ezekiel chapter 35, Philippians chapters 4 and 5, were studied.

The Bible class on Wednesday October 10 was led by Pete Barrett. David McEvoy was the speaker and his subject – “Rejoicing in the Lord” – was based on Philippians chapter 4.

The Sunday services were led by Martin Spencer, with Alan McEvoy from Halifax Balmoral as the speaker. The evening Bible talk was “ A layman’s view of creation.”

The sister’s class will meet on Tuesday at 7.30pm. On Wednesday evening it will be the annual business meeting.

On Sunday at 6pm, there will be a special family-based talk –“ The nature of Jesus.”

On Saturday October 20 at 11am and repeated at 1pm there will be a special talk –“Looking to Israel for the return of Christ.” This is to be held at Huddersfield University, room HWG/03 (Harold Wilson building). Free refreshments will be served after the talk. Anyone wishing to attend will be very welcome.

PARKWOOD

A pleasant Wednesday afternoon meeting was held at Parkwood Methodist Church. Guest speaker was Mr Joe Lloyd, who talked about a trip to Japan and a postcard collection. In the chair was Jean Johnson, the pianist was Nora Beaumont and refreshments were by Betty Sykes and Barbara Beevors.

The congregation was welcomed to Parkwood Methodist Church on Sunday morning to a favourite hymn service. The leader was Mr Gareth Beaumont and the organist was Mr John Orton. Prayers were by Sandra McSweeney and bible readers were Barbara Rushforth and Freda Lloyd. Twelve church members introduced their favourite hymn. Coffee was served after the service by Elaine and John Oldham.

There will be a drop in lunch at Parkwood Methodist on Wednesday October 17 and a community breakfast on Saturday October 20 from 9.30am.

SLAITHWAITE

Hilary Ellis welcomed the Mikron Theatre Group to a meeting of Slaithwaite Good Companions. The group comprised Ruth and Rob and new artists Caroline and Nick. The first half of the programme was entitled Can You Keep A Secret? which was the story of the Luddites. Each guest took more than one part in what turned out to be quite a sad tale. The second half was Losing the Plot to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of allotments – and this proved to be very humorous. Members were very impressed with the show of talent, excellent singing and their ability to play so many musical instruments. This was certainly one of the highlights in the group’s calendar. Special cakes were served instead of tea and biscuits. The Mikron group was thanked by Patricia Parkinson.

St James’s Parish Church Holy Communion service was led by the Rev Robin Townsend, assisted by Raymond Denton. The lessons were from Hebrews chapter 4 – Jesus the Great High Priest. The Holy Gospel was taken from St Mark chapter 10 – The Rich Man – and the address were all given by the Rev Robin. Prayers were led by Jenny Schofield. The Sunday school study was the healing power of Jesus and the organist was Rodney Pearson.

The Ladies’ Fellowship Group enjoyed a very pleasant Tuesday afternoon when they visited Shred Church for their annual afternoon tea and concert. Arrangements had been made by Maureen Weaving.

On Wednesday three members from the group attended the Dedictation Service of Bags for Life at Dalton St Paul’s Methodist Church. The money raised will be used to provide specially treated mosquito nets for babies under five in two areas in Kenya.

The Rev Jo Archer Siddal led morning worship. Gordon Ellis read verses from Pslam 71, John’s Gospel and from Acts and the organist was Shirley Scott.
