GOLCAR

The Rev Canon Stephen Henry welcomed the congregation and was the celebrant for the family communion service at St John’s Church. Margaret Henry gave the gospel reading from Mark 9 versus 30-37 and Canon Stephen based his address on ‘Status and Christian Responsibility’. Prayers were led by Jeremy Cuss and Anne Norton was the organist. Sunday Club had made a pendant with St Christopher in the middle and Sunday Youth had made sheep and goats based on the parable from Matthew 25 versus 31-36.

LINTHWAITE

Linthwaite Methodist Players held their annual meeting at the church. Lesley Baxter was in the chair and Margaret Moriarty was minutes secretary. The meeting stood for one minute’s silence in memory of Nancy Dyson, a vice-president of the society who performed and also produced many productions. All the office holders were re-elected – president Molly Shepherd, vice-president Brian Dyson, treasurer Adrian Calverley – but the Players are in need of a secretary. Andrea Morley will be responsible for the children’s production in November, Peter Pan, and Donald Sykes agreed to produce the spring play in the week before Easter 2013.

There was a good attendance at Linthwaite Methodist Thursday Fellowship when member Peter Stead gave a talk ‘A Surprise from Peter’, illustrated with pictures from his travels around the world. Doreen Liversidge was in the chair and Jenny Sutherland was pianist. The secretary advised that the next speaker would be Mr Lee Griffiths, talking about his work with the Royal British Legion. Refreshments were provided by Paula Schofield and Maureen Stead.

Members of Linthwaite Methodist Junior Church enjoyed a fun filled ‘Swimming Party’ at Slaithwaite Leisure Centre, where they had a private session playing with the big toys in the pool. Afterwards there was a hot meal back at the church. Thanks to the Junior Church leaders who organised and supervised the event.

MARSDEN

Morning worship at the United Church, Marsden, on Sunday morning was led by Jean Broome, a member of the church. The service was based on The Love Of God Through Jesus. Jean illustrated what she was saying by reading a story which was being used in junior church at the same time. Bible readings were by Carl Butters and Barry Biltcliffe, Marjorie Boothroyd was the organist. After the service coffee and tea was served Joyce Clapperton and Margaret Kenyon.

MILNSBRIDGE

Kevin Charlesworth led the Bible class on Wednesday evening at the Milnsbridge Christadelphians. The speaker was Pete Barrett and his subject was ‘Noah, Daniel and Job’ based on Ezekiel chapter 14 v 14. The Sunday services were led by James Walker. The speaker was Tim Shearn from Cleckheaton, his subject at the evening talk was ‘Of Such Is The Kingdom Of God.’ The meetings for the coming week are as follows: the reading group will meet this morning to discuss the Bible readings for the day. Tomorrow at 7.30pm, Andrew Whittaker is to speak on ‘The Trials Of A Watchman.’ The subject for the evening lecture at 6pm next Sunday (September 30) will be ‘How Did They Know That?’ Visitors are welcome to attend the services and meetings.

PARKWOOD

A drop in lunch was held at Parkwood Methodist Church on Wednesday, organised by Linda Marry assisted by ladies of the church. A scarecrow festival weekend was held at Parkwood Methodist Church to support Cancer Research UK with a display of 25 scarecrows in the church and schoolroom plus the harvest display and Sunday morning service. Preacher was the Rev Pamela Ward assisted by Jez Hackett with the children in messy church making miniature scarecrows plus uniformed organisations attended the service. The pianist was Claire Middleton, refreshments all weekend were provided by ladies of the church.

SLAITHWAITE

Slaithwaite Good Companions was introduced by Margaret Cook, when speaker was Neville Kaye, a surprise as the group had an afternoon tai-chi qigong. Everybody had a go and it turned out to be a fun afternoon for most with lots of laughs. Some of the exercises could be done seated. The speaker was thanked by Patricia Parkinson.

St James’ Parish Church Holy Communion service was led by the Rev Robin Townsend assisted by Raymond Denton and Dorothy Gledhill. The lessons from James chapter 3 was read by Alison Parkinson. The Holy Gospel St Marks chapter 9 and the address was ‘Christian Wisdom Is Being A Servant’ was given by the Rev Robin. Prayers were led by Simon Parkinson and the Sunday School were made preparations for the Harvest Festival. Organist was Alvy Whithead.

The Rev Jo Archer-Siddal led Sunday morning worship at the Methodist Church. Karston Svensguard read from Kings 1, chapter 19 the story of ‘Elijah‘s Flight To Horeb’. The theme of the Rev Jo’s sermon were words from this passage ‘What Doest Thou Here?’. The organist was Roger Mitchell.
