CROSLAND MOOR

Members of the Association of Christian Fellowship from St Barnabas’ Church enjoyed their annual evening out, this year travelling by coach to Wortley Hall near Barnsley. The journey was through lovely country side and the stately home and gardens were beautiful, especially all the different colours of rhododendron. The 18th century house was originally the home of the Wharncliffe family until the 2nd World War. For the last 50 years it has been owned by the Labour party and is currently used for trade union conferences – it is also used for weddings and other social functions. On arrival members were taken on a tour of the flower gardens, vegetable gardens and the stable blocks during which time they were given information about the history of the place. Later, sandwiches and drinks were served in the dining room and a vote of thanks was proposed by Mavis Armitage to the secretary Kathleen Pratt for organising the evening.

St. Barnabas' Choir and friends, including friends from the Huddersfield Choral Society gave a concert in the church. The choirmaster was Tim Wilkes who conducted items which were accompanied by the organist Geoffrey Hallas, and also accompanied on the piano items conducted by Rachel Haley. Solos and duets were sung by Rachel Haley, Becky Sutcliffe, Ann Wilkes, Caroline Jones and Michelle Walker, all accompanied by Tim Wilkes on the piano. Geoffrey Hallas played a solo organ piece and African drums were played by Eddie Purcell, who also composed one of the choir pieces Queen of the May. Refreshments were served at the interval by Margaret Morelli and Andrea Rattigan and the concierge was Tracey Netherwood.

GOLCAR

Mrs Janice Swallow welcomed the congregation to the Golcar Providence Methodist morning service on Sunday June 10. The Rev Pam Ward led the Holy Communion and the theme for the service was What God Did With His Hands. Mrs B Hallas read the bible reading from Mark- 3 verses 20-35. Mr John Burt was the organist. Coffee was served afterwards in the schoolroom.

LINTHWAITE

The Rev Jo Archer-Siddall led morning worship at Linthwaite Methodist Church, which included Holy Communion and was followed by the General Church Meeting. In her sermon Rev Jo spoke about discipleship and how it is a life long commitment, taking her text from Matthew 28 verse 18. After the service Abigail Archer sold copies of her book Miriam and the Hens, a delightful and well illustrated story of her younger sister and their ‘noisy hens.’ Proceeds from the sale of the storybook will go to a school in Mara, Tanzania, which is twinned with Abi’s school – Linthwaite Ardron. The book is now on sale in Waterstones in Huddersfield.

MARSDEN

Morning worship at the United Church was led by Francis Horton who spoke on the Growth of the Kingdom. Bible readings were given by Ruth and Edward Shelldrake and Holy Communion was served at the end of the service. The organist was Marjorie Boothroyd and refreshments were served afterwards by Ruth and Edward Shelldrake.

All Age Communion at St Bartholomew’s Church was led by the vicar, the Rev Geoff Garside. During the service a gift of Maundy Money, which had been presented to the late Mr and Mrs George Hibbard when the Queen visited Wakefield Cathedral in 2005, and donated to the church by a friend, was dedicated. The Rev Robert Chambers, a nephew of the late Mr Hibbard, and his wife Mary were welcomed to the service. Robert gave the sermon and assisted at the Communion. The children continued with the theme of Olympics with an illustrated talk by Simon Crook explaining about always doing ones best and spreading God’s light. They then made their own Olympic torch with the leaders, Stuart and Louise Clark. The Junior Church choir under the direction of Simon sang the Gloria and Agnus Dei. Ian Hunt was the organist. The lessons were read by Dennis Brook and Joan Biggs read the Gospel. Prayers were offered by Christine Garside. Sidespersons were Mary Horn, Joan Ladbrooke and Jean Pennington. Coffee was served by the Dads of the Junior Church.

MILNSBRIDGE

At Milnsbridge Christadelphians, Paul Rose led the Bible class meeting on when speaker was Peter Simpson from Rochdale who gave a presentation on the prophet Amos.

On Saturday there was a special event at the town hall. Greg Newton from Harrogate gave a presentation looking at some of the social problems in our world today and the Bible’s answer. Follow up seminars are planned .

The Sunday services were led by Kevin Waterhouse and Jim Nightingale from Castleford gave the evening Bible talk entitled A Living Hope.

On Wednesday at 7.30pm the Bible class subject is Adam and Jesus. On Sunday June 24 at 6pm the speaker is Grant Ramsden, whose subject title is Jesus and his Bible. Visitors are always welcome to all classes and meetings.

PARKWOOD

A drop in lunch was held at Parkwood Methodist Church on Wednesday organised by Sheila Swain and Robin Whitwam assisted by ladies of the church. A community breakfast held on Saturday morning was organised by Freda and Joe Lloyd.

On Saturday afternoon an indoor garden party was held at Linda and Luke Merry’s house with refreshments and a cake stall.

Sunday morning service at Parkwood Methodist Church featured guest preacher Mr Barry Lee, the bible reader was Anne Ivy and the pianist was Kenneth Rothery. Coffee was served after the service by Margaret, Christine and Liam.

Golcar Gala is on Saturday from 11am to 4pm organised by Parkwood Scout Group. Messy Church is on Sunday at 10.30am at Parkwood Methodist Church.

SLAITHWAITE

Pat Osbourne was the speaker at this week’s meeting of Slaithwaite Good Companions. She was introduced by Margaret Cook and her subject was Lady Randy, mother of Winston Churchill. She was thanked by Patricia Parkinson. Members celebrated the birthday of Nina Dalton and Margaret Cook was the pianist.

St James’s Parish church Holy Communion service was led by the Rev Robin Townsend assisted by Raymond Denton who read the first lesson from Proverbs chapter 23 – The 16th Saying. The Holy Gospel from St John, chapter 14 – The Way to the Father – and the address were given by Heather Croft. Prayers were led by the Rev Robin and the organist was Alvi Whitehead.

Miss Margaret Riley of Elland led morning worship at the Methodist Church on Sunday. Shirley and John Scott were the readers from Two Corinthians and Mark 4 and Margaret’s sermon was based on the question “Have we seen any green shoots of recovery. The pianist as Margaret Stevenson.
