Helen Davies welcomed the congregation to a “worship in today’s world” service at St John’s , for which the theme was listening. Readings were by Marion Hall and in her talk Helen Walinkse-Kielle spoke about the work of the United churches’ healing ministry. Anne Crossland led prayers and Ann Norton played the piano. Sunday Club and Sunday Youth talked about the meaning of Ascension day
Shirley Lingwood spoke on Memories Are Made Of This at the Providence Methodist Friendship Group. Barbara Armitage and Elsie Turrell provided supper and Gillian Beever was in the chair. Thanks went to those who helped at Golcar Lily Day. Ian Day welcomed Rev Pam Ward to lead the Communion service on the theme of Safe in God’s Care. She showed photos from a visit to Iona. Mr I Day read from John chapter 17 verses 6-19. Mrs M Israel was the organist. Junior Church was led by Mrs J Swallow and The Lord’s Prayer was their theme. Refreshments were served in the schoolroom .
LINTHWAITE
Methodist Church morning worship was led by Sue Burton, who used the theme of Easter Disciples, and in particular Peter, as her text. Hilary Baxter read from Acts 3 verses 1-10 – Peter heals a lame beggar – and Linda Nuttall was the organist. In her address to the young people, Sue talked about how we communicate .
MARSDEN
In connection with Christian Aid Week a coffee morning and stall selling home made cakes was held at The United Church on Saturday, where house to house collection envelopes were brought in. Over £141 was raised.
Sunday Morning worship at the United Church was led by Rev Richard Thompson. He gave a Circle Story for the children before they left for Junior Church. Tom Fearn read from Acts and Mr Thompson spoke on Facing Change with Jesus. The organist was Marjorie Boothroyd. Tea, coffee and cakes raised a further £37.
Holy Communion was held at St Bartholomew’s on Ascension Day, jointly with Slaithwaite Church. It was led by the Rev Geoff Garside and the Rev Robin Townsend gave the address. The lesson from Revelations was read by Geoffrey Holroyd. Prayers were offered by David Corps and organist was Ian Hunt.
Sunday All Age Communion was led by the vicar. The lessons from Acts 1 verses 15-17 and 22-end and 1 John 5 verses 9-13 were read by Margaret O’Connor and the Gospel from John 17 verses 6-19 was read by Joan Biggs. Prayers were offered by Susan Everill. The Junior Choir directed by Simon Crook sang the Gloria. Simon Crook gave an illustrated talk to the children about Belonging and Togetherness. The Junior Church with Louise and Stuart Clark held activities about the Olympic Games and their relation to Christianity. Ian Hunt was the organist. Sidespersons were Pat Purcell and Jean Pennington. Coffee was served by Jenny Mitchell and Susan Everill. Next Sunday, Sung Eucharist at 10am will be with friends at St James, Slaithwaite. Anyone wishing to go should meet at church at 9.30am if needing transport. At 2pm in Marsden a Walk of Witness will be held with the United Reformed Church from the bottom of Peel Street, to Marsden Park.
MILNSBRIDGE
At Milnsbridge Christadelphian's on Tuesday the sister’s class was led by Margaret Stevenson and a talk based on a book Women Who Knew The Mortal Messiah, was given by Pat Charlesworth. At the Bible class on Wednesday, James Walker gave a talk entitled The Casting Away Of Israel.
Sunday services were led by James Walker, Sarah Barrett played the organ. The speaker from Barton-under-Needwood, was Reg Carr, whose evening talk was Why Did Tyndale Burn?
Meetings planned for the coming week start with a coffee morning reading group at 10.30am on Tuesday. On Wednesday May 23 at 7.30pm the Bible class subject is Judge Not. The Sunday evening talk commencing at 6pm is “ The meaning of the first parable in the Bible.”
PARKWOOD
A drop in lunch was held on Wednesday at the Methodist Church, organised by Linda Murray, assisted by ladies of the church. Proceeds were for Christian Aid.
Marion Lloyd welcomed the congregation to the Methodist church anniversary service on Sunday morning. Guest preacher was Rev Peter Bedford, bible reader Gareth Beaumont, pianist Rhianydd Booth. A faith lunch was held after the service.
SLAITHWAITE
The Good Companions were welcomed by Margaret Cook and Joan Abdy spoke about her life as a Christian, her church life as a Sunday School teacher and school teacher. She was thanked by Patricia Parkinson.
St James’ Holy Communion service for Ascension, was led by Rev Robin Townsend, assisted by Raymond Denton. The lesson from the Revelation was read by Patricia Parkinson and the gospel from St Luke and address was by Rev Robin. Prayers were led by Jenny Schofield. Sunday School led by Hannah and Simon Parkinson, studied Esther.Organist was Alvi Whitehead.
The WI met on Wednesday evening at the community centre. Jane Barff was the in the chair and she introduced Margaret Laycock, a retired physiotherapist who gave a talk on the brain, as well as tips on how to keep active. Members brought along healthy recipes and tasters.
Sunday worship at the Methodist Church was led by Brenda Ellis of Ainley Top. Marjorie Crowther read from John’s gospel and Wendy Blackburn from Acts. Brenda’s sermon was based on the ascension of Jesus. Organist was Wendy Redfearn. Wendy Blackburn thanked Barbara and Karston Svensgaard for the work they had done over the year for the plant sale, which took place on Saturday morning, when £634 was raised,.
