Restoration and faith was the theme of the service at Linthwaite Methodist Church, which was led by Mr Raymond Brook. The congregation joined in the responsive reading of Psalm 126 ‘A Song of ascents.’ Henry Tennant read from Job 42 v 1-6 and 10-17 which speaks of the Lord restoring Job’s fortunes. The gospel reading was from Mark 10 v 46-52 ‘Blind Bartimaeus Receives His Sight,’ was read by Maureen Stead.

Next Sunday Linthwaite Methodist Church will hold a Remembrance Service at 9.30am led by Rev Ann Sherratt, where they will be joined by the uniformed clubs, who will present their colours.

MARSDEN

Sunday morning worship at the United Church was led by the Rev Colin Veer. Peter Hirst read from Luke chapter 19 and his reading, of the story of Jesus and Zaccheus, formed the basis of Rev Veer’s sermon. Holy Communion was served at the close of the service, Marjorie Boothroyd was the organist and refreshments afterwards were served by Margaret Kenyon and Joyce Clapperton.

The annual laying of the poppy wreath service of the second battalion of the seventh Duke of Wellington’s regiment memorial cross on Pule Hill will be held on Saturday, November 9 at 11am. All those wishing to attend please meet at the first layby of the A62 past the former Coach & Horses at 10.15am. Sound footwear and waterproof clothing are essential .

All Saints Day service on Sunday morning at St Bartholomew’s was arranged by the All Age Worship Group and led by David Fisher who also gave the talk on the theme of Baptism as we welcomed three new members into Christ’s family. The vicar, the Rev Geoff Garside baptised twins Maddison and Olivia and Alexander William. Richard Webb gave the reading from 2 Thessalonians verses 1-12. Prayers were led by Alison Gibson. Music was provided by Jon Robinson (organist) and Richard Webb and Elizabeth Foden. Sideswomen were Mary Horn, Joan Ladbrooke and Jean Pennington. Coffee was served by Susan Everill and Christine Garside.

A service of Holy Communion was then held in the Lady Chapel.

A service for All Souls was held in the Chancel at 4pm.

Today there will be a service at 9.30am in the Lady Chapel.

The Remembrance service on November 10 will take place at the Cenotaph in the park at 11am. The parade will then march to St Bartholomew’s for a Service of Remembrance at 11.15am.

MILNSBRIDGE

Milnsbridge Christadelphians’ Sister’s class met on Tuesday evening. Margaret Stevenson led the meeting, the speaker was Pauline Instone from Blackburn whose subject was “ Be still & know that I am God-the privilege of prayer.”

Martin Spencer led the Bible class on Wednesday evening when the speaker was Kevin Waterhouse who spoke about “The grace of God.”

The Sunday services were taken by Kevin Charlesworth with a guest speaker from Stockport – Giles Marsden. There was a church tea followed by a talk entitled “Does it matter what I believe?”

On Tuesday morning there will be a coffee morning Bible reading group. At the Bible class on Wednesday November 6 at 7.30pm Minder Paul will give a talk on “The legitimacy of Christ.” On Sunday evening at 6pm there will be a talk on” The gift of God.” Visitors are welcome to go along to meetings and services.

SLAITHWAITE

Last Tuesday afternoon in place of their usual meeting nine members of the Methodist Fellowship Group travelled to the annual Shred birthday tea and enjoyed a very pleasant afternoon. The Sunday morning service was led by Rev Anne Sherratt and included Holy Communion. Leaders were Shirley Scott from Matthew 5 and Marjorie Crowther from Revelation Chapter 7. The organist was Wendy Redfearn.

At Slaithwaite Good Companions Wendy Blackburn introduced our speaker, Joan Abde, who told us at the age of 16 she would like to visit a Kabbutz, and 50 years later she was finally able to do that. Visiting Israel for 17 days and seeing many places of our Christian faith, Bethlehem, Mount Carmel, the dead sea and the sea of Galilee where it became very windy and Capurnaum where Christ performed many miracles. She had many photographs to show us and it was as if we were also on the journey. She was thanked by Wendy and Maureen Weaving was our pianist.

St James Parish Church Family and Holy Communion service was led by Rev Robin Townsned, assisted by Raymond Denton. The Holy Gospel from Thessalonians chapter 1 vs 1-12, “The Life and Faith of the Thessalonians” was read by Sara Smith. The address by Alison Parkinson, with boxes of chocolates as examples. Saying that life needs chewing over and there are hard and soft times. Life doesn’t change with a menu, we have highs and lows in our faith but God is our centre. She quoted Psalm 34 verse 8 “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” The prayers were led by Rev Robin followed by the Eucharist and blessings and the organist was Simon Crook. Please note Remembrance Service is at 9.45am in Church with Slaithwaite Band and then at the war memorial at about 10.45am.
