BROCKHOLES

Parish communion at Brockholes St George's Church was celebrated by the Rev Jenny Barnes, who spoke of ‘Jesus as The Bread of Life’. Elizabeth Mosley read the lesson and Roger Kenworthy was the server. The organist was Verena Wood.

Mr Steven Hardy led worship at Brockholes Methodist Church when the pianist was Mrs Kath Gaukroger.

HOLMBRIDGE

Midweek holy communion at St David's Church Holmbridge was conducted by the Rev Geoff Bamford when lessons were read by Ian Gold.

Parish Eucharist on Sunday, including the baptism of Alistair Cranbourne Taylor, was led by the Rev Geoff Bamford. Lessons were read by Judith Roberts and John Parker. The chalice was administered by Dorothy Parker and the organist was Jean Chadwick.

HONLEY

Members of Honley Probus Club observed a silence as a mark of respect for senior member Alan Hirst who died recently. New member Stephen Harris was welcomed to the meeting. Members congratulated Colin Hill, who provided coffee in celebration of his golden wedding. Chairman Alec Wallace introduced speaker Tony Burkitt, whose subject was New Zealand. Using slides, Mr Burkitt gave an interesting talk covering the history, flora, fauna and people of the islands. He gave a spectacular survey of the many contrasting landscapes from the thermal areas on North Island to the southern of Alps of South Island. Colin Hill proposed the vote of thanks.

Parish Eucharist at St Mary's Church, Honley, was led by the Rev Jenny Barnes, who preached on ‘The Bread of Life’. Margaret Hay read the lesson and intercessions were led by Pat and Cliff Green. The organist was Jean Cheeseman. Following the service, coffee was accompanied by cake and wine provided by Pat and Cliff Green in celebration of their golden wedding.

MELTHAM

President Barbara Sheard was in the chair for the latest meeting of Meltham Women’s Institute on Tuesday last week. The tea ladies were Chris Reeves and Ruth Hutson. The speaker for the evening was Sue Bellamy whose subject was ‘Brief Encounter Bras and Underwear’. She told of how she set up her own business in selling underwear. She also brought along samples. The vote of thanks was given by Jill Douglas. The raffle, organised by Jean Howard, was won by Ruth Hutson.

On Wednesday, August 8 Pennine Borders Flower Club who hold their monthly meetings at St Bartholomew's Parish Church Hall, Meltham, held a charity evening for the Huddersfield Alzheimer's Society. A meal was held at Canton Chef Chinese in Honley, attended by 60 people, A raffle & quiz was held and a grand total of £400 was raised for Huddersfield Alzheimer's society.

SCHOLES

On Sunday, August 12 Trevor Jones was the preacher, Christine Lockwood was the organist and the congregation was welcomed at the door by Dougie Brodie and Wilf Battye. The readings were taken from the New Living Translation Ephesians 4:25 and 5 v 1and 2; John 6:35 and v 41-51, the reader was Cynthia Osborne. Coffee and biscuits were served after the service by Margaret and Richard Thompson and Wilf Battye.

UPPERTHONG

The Tuesday prayer breakfast at Upperthong was held at the home of the Dawsons. Midweek communion on Thursday at St John's Church was taken by the Rev John Barnes, who was also the celebrant. Lunch was served in the meeting room afterwards.

Family communion at St John's Church was led by the Rev Di Ellerton, who preached the sermon and was the celebrant. The readers were John Ellerton and Sue Leege. Les Hopkins led prayers and Philip Broadbent assisted with the chalice. Ian Greenhalgh was the organist. Refreshments were served afterwards by Ruth Schorah.

WILSHAW

Churchgoers at St Mary’s, Wilshaw, held a coffee morning at Meltham Church Hall on Saturday August 4. There was a cake stall, a craft stall, a tombola stall, a girlie gardening stall and a raffle. Thanks go to those that helped to make this such a happy event and to all those who supported it. About £300 was raised for church funds. Last Sunday a service of Holy Communion was led by the Rev Judy Kenworthy. Clive Pearson was organist. Louise Brook read the lessons and Rebecca Lockley took the collection.

WOOLDALE

Morning worship at Wooldale Methodist Church was led by Michael Tolson. The organist was Nigel Morris. Refreshments were provided after the service.

The service at Wooldale Methodist Free Church last Sunday was led by Mrs Margaret Tinker who was helped by Mrs Wendy Bower the readings were taken from Matthew Chapter 22 verses 37 to 39, Deuteronomy Chapter 6 verses 1 to 9 and Matthew chapter 5 verses 33 to 48. the theme for the service was Perfect Love, Margaret read a article from a book about perfect love, and how we can only be as perfect as we can be ourselves we cannot strive to be like someone else. Wendy led the prayers of inter-session. Flowers and a card were given out at the end of the service to a couple celebrating their golden wedding Anniversary. Coffee followed the service. Mrs Sylvia Bowden was the pianist.
