BROCKHOLES

Holy communion at St George’s Church was celebrated by the Rev Liam Beadle. The preacher was Beverley Playle, newly licensed reader in the parish. She spoke about the Importance of Being Thankful. Margaret Kenworthy read the lesson and Roger Kenworthy was the server. Paul Arthur was the organist.

On Sunday afternoon, members of St George’s Church joined those of the Methodist Church for Songs of Praise, led by the Rev Tim Moore. Both churches made impressive collections of tinned and packet foods for the food bank run by the Welcome Centre in Huddersfield. Cash offerings will be send to the Huddersfield Epilepsy Group.

Young people of AD also met with harvest as their theme. They created a collage with Sue with a message of Giving and Sharing. With Caroline, they identified different fruits by taste and with Val they enjoyed a variety of games. They also heard a talk by Keeley, of the Welcome Centre about the valuable work they do.

Morning harvest festival at the Methodist Church was led by the Rev David Bidnell. Mrs Eileen Littlewood played the piano. Mr Granville Dews read scripture and Mr Graham Nicholson welcomed the congregation. Mrs Christine Williams and Mrs Pamela Ackroyd provided refreshments.

At 3pm on Sunday, St George’s Church joined with the Methodist Church for a joyous harvest Songs of Praise led by the Rev Tim Moore. The organist was Mr Noel Clarke. The hymns were followed by poems read by Louis and Iris Davies Johnson and Sophie Knox, young members of St George’s Church, and by Paul Grant, Eileen Littlewood and Granville Dews, of the Methodist Church. Mrs Susan Dews welcomed the congregation. Refreshments of cakes and tea were provided and served by the Brockholes ladies. Items of dried goods were given to the Welcome Centre and �325.30 was raised by the combined congregation for the Huddersfield Epilepsy Group.

There was no Bible study on Monday as the church council meeting was held. Soup and roll and various other lunch items will be served in the church parlour at 2pm followed by a card-making class. All are welcome.

The 50th annual meeting of Brockholes WI was held in the Methodist Church parlour. It was opened by President Zita Crossley who gave a toast to 50 years of WI in Brockholes, and oldest member Elsie Greatorex cut the celebration cake, which was made by member Beattie. The secretary read the annual report, followed by finance, and president’s report and her thanks to all members. Nora Fenwick proposed a vote of thanks to all the committee for their work. Special speaker at the meeting was Gillian Swift, West Yorkshire County Advisor for WI. This was followed by a faith supper and quiz by Margaret Brinley.

HOLMBRIDGE

Midweek Holy Communion at St David’s Church was led by the Rev Nick Heaton. Lessons were read by Ian Gold. The Monkey Business mother and toddler group met and free lunches were served. On Friday evening, the second session of Puzzling Questions was held in the West End Room chaired by the Rev Nick Heaton.

Parish eucharist at St David’s Church with creche and young people's group was led by the Rev Nick Heaton when lessons were read by Judi Bamford and Judith Roberts. Intercessions were led by Carolyn Burley and the chalice was administered by Ian Gold. The organist was Jean Chadwick.

HONLEY

Parish eucharist and harvest thanksgiving at St Mary’s Church was led by the Rev Liam Beadle. Reader Beverley Playle gave an address on the theme of Thanksgiving. The lesson was read by Jenny Waind and Clive Waind led intercessions. At the close of the service. the choir sang the anthem Look at the World, by John Rutter. The organist was Jean Cheeseman.

UPPERTHONG

The weekly prayer breakfast was held at the home of the Dawsons. Holy communion on Thursday at St John’s Church was conducted by the Rev Geoff Banks, who was also the celebrant.

Family communion at St John’s Church was led by the Rev Di Ellerton, who preached the sermon and was celebrant. The readers were Tim Cock and Les Hopkins, who also led prayers. Bill Brown assisted with the chalice and Hazel Thompson was the organist. Refreshments were served by Sue Dawson.

WILSHAW

Last Sunday St Mary’s held it’s annual gift day. Rev Maureen Read led a thanksgiving service with Holy Communion, when gifts were presented and blessed. Kim Howe assisted at the alter and read the lessons, Miss Pearson was organist, Louise Brook read the prayers and Peter Pearson was sidesman. Rev Maureen reminded us that we should always thank God for his generosity to us and to remember that the best gift of all is his son Jesus.

WOOLDALE

The harvest festival service on Sunday at the Methodist Free Church was led by Mr John Mason, helped by his wife Elaine. The service opened with a reading from Mark about sowing the seed and creation. In his sermon John spoke of the importance of the seed being sown before the harvest could be reaped. Each member of the congregation was given a seed to help them focus on importance of not seeing the seed grow as we often don’t see our prayers being answered, but God does. Lunch was provided by the ladies. The window theme this year was music and all the emotions that music can give, for instance joy, sadness and calmness. The organist was Mr Peter Coldwell.
