BIRDSEDGE

Sunday service at Birdsedge Church was taken by Terry Frost. Terry illustrated ‘be sure your sins will find you out’ with a story of a boy who retaliated by burying his sister’s doll and denying all knowledge of its loss. Later, when rain and warmer weather caused plants to grow, he discovered that the doll had been filled with types of seed which grew obviously in the shape of the missing doll. Terry read Ephesians 2 verses 1-10 ‘Made alive in Christ’ and verses 9 and 10 ‘for it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – the gift of God ... for we are God’s workmanship , created to do good works which God prepared in advance for us to do.’

Next Sunday morning the congregation will be joining in the service at Hade Edge Band room which will be broadcast on Two Valleys radio as part of ‘Top of the World Arts Weekend’.

The speaker at the following Sunday service will be Brian Kay.

At the village hall management meeting the current secretary told the committee that she would be retiring at the AGM – to be held on Tuesday July 2 – after 40 years service. The Village Voice Newsletter has been circulated with requests for more people on the village to offer help. However much time and effort they could specify would be very much appreciated – there is much to do which would be easier spread out among a few more.

The Lunch Club on June 27 noon-1pm will feature beef stew in Yorkshire pudding followed by a mystery sweet.

Quiz Night is on Friday June 28 8pm. For information about events at the Hall see the web site or ring 604289.

Hade Edge Academy Community choir with the Concertina and Accordion Group gave an absolutely brilliant concert. A great pity there were too many empty seats. However, £160 was raised for Kirkwood Hospice.

CLAYTON WEST

The morning worship at the Methodist Church was a service of Holy Communion led by Rev David Priestnall. This was David’s last service at the church before he retires in July. Church steward Maxine Lodge thanked him for all his care and work for the church in every way, and gave him a small gift from members. The farewell service for all the circuit is on July 7 at 6.30pm at Skelmanthorpe Methodist Church, when a circuit gift will be presented. Readings from Exodus and Corinthians were given by Peter Holt and Lucie Froggatt. David spoke about the Christian Faith being summed up in three words taken from Paul’s letter to the church: 'Jesus is Lord' and we believe this through the gift of the Holy Spirit. Stewards were Betty Booth and Maxine Lodge, and the pianist was Jane Hobson. Diana Hunt gave the gift of flowers for the communion table. After the service coffee and biscuits were served by Wendy Barber, also the men shared chocolates given for Father’s Day. Everyone enjoyed fellowship with David over coffee.

The monthly coffee morning was held last Saturday. Proceeds from various stalls and bacon sandwiches cooked and served by Diana Hunt, were for church funds.

SHELLEY

Shelley Over 60s members met in the village hall last Thursday, when the bingo line was won by Joyce Booth who also won the full house. No-one had the first three numbers on one card, so the prize was carried over. The whist high of 94 was won by Linda Brauner and Vera Rothson and the low went to Joan Cope from seven tables. There were only two birthdays to celebrate this week – Sheila Morris and David Vickers. Raffle prizes were won by Mary Hobson, Lilian Armitage, Gordon Burgin, Robin Small and Jo Morrison.
