Malcolm Jacob took the service at Birdsedge Church. The service next week will be a Worship service.

The Quiz for this month at Birdsedge Village Hall was won by the Wonky Donkeys. Loads of supper was eaten. The next quiz will be on Friday November 29th.

The Lunch Club on Thursday October 31st will be serving beef stew in Yorkshire pudding followed by fruit pie.

There will be a Halloween party at 6:30 on Thursday October 31st for parents and children.

A bonfire with fireworks will be held on Tuesday November 5th at 6:30pm. Free entry; food available.

“Take That 2” will be performing on stage in the Hall on Saturday December 7th on Ladies Xmas Night. Tickets are selling quickly at £11 pre booked only on 604289. Doors open from 7pm; food and bar available.

There will be a Beetle Drive in the Village Hall organised by the Hospice Support Group on Saturday November 2nd from 6:30. Light supper at half time and bar throughout. It’s amazing that some people have never tried it. Adults £2, children £1; finishing time is usually around 8pm. A good family fun evening.

CLAYTON WEST

Morning worship at the Methodist Church was led by Beryl Holt, a member of the church and local preacher. She spoke of our hope in Jesus, as saviour, and nothing can separate us from his Love we need trust in God and call on him at all times. Lucie Froggatt read Psalm 40, a song of praise. Jane Woodcock read from Romans, telling us of God's Love in Jesus. Stewards were Diana Hunt and Maxine Lodge. Coffee and biscuits were served after the service by Jane Woodcock. Last Tuesday the afternoon fellowship met for an informal time of thinking and reading about the season of Autumn. Refreshments were enjoyed afterwards.

DENBY DALE

The prayer and bible fellowship on Monday evening was led by Mike Hopcroft. On Sunday the Harvest Festival was held. In the afternoon there was a family service and was led by Robert Nuttall and the Sunday School when the theme of the service was the Harvest Festival alphabet. After the service a buffet tea was served. Robert Nuttall led the thanksgiving service in the evening. The bible was read by James Peace and Celia Pickles and the choir sang. John Orton was the pianist.

EMLEY

The “Holy Communion” at St Michael the Archangel Parish Church, Emley, service celebrated Bible Sunday by looking at “the least read world best seller.”

By comparing it to a recipe book, a car manual, a map and a guidebook, Heather invited us to look at ways of using the Bible to guide our daily lives as well as being a source of reassurance, history and examples of God’s plans.

There was no evening service.

Regular services and events continue this week, with Holy Communion at 7pm on Tuesday; Holy Communion on Wednesday at 9am followed by coffee in church; with “Tuesday @ 2” for babies, toddlers and their carers; there will be NO YOUTH GROUPS this week as the Youth Team have a well-earned rest. There is also Coffee Morning on Monday from 10.30am.

The course “Moving On” continues this week: on Tuesday at 8pm in church for those who want to find out more about their faith as well as for those who are thinking about confirmation. The 6-week course on rediscovering mission and re-imagining church, on Thursdays at 7.30pm at St Thomas’s Church, Bradley will continues this week. Both courses have been well attended, but there is still room for anyone who wants to join the groups.

Next Sunday, Nov 3rd, Souls’ Service at 4pm, during which we remember all our departed friends and relatives – a moving service of prayers and music. The evening service at 6 p.m. will be Holy Communion.

On November 10th will be Remembrance Sunday, with our annual service at the Memorial Cross as part of morning service – poppy wreaths will be laid in memory of the local fallen soldiers.

Members of Shelley Over 60s held their weekly meeting in th Village Hall last Thursday. The bingo line was won by Brenda Wilkinson and the full house by Sylvia Deeley. No one had the first 3 numbers on one card, so the prize carried over. The whist high of 97 was won by Margaret Lee and the low of 65 went to Jo Morrison from 9 tables. Their were no birthdays to celebrate this week. Raffle prizes were won by Vera Wilkinson, Joan Horne, Pauline Workman, Madge Shaw, Harry Rose and Linda Brauner. A reminder that next Thursday (30th) we shall meet in the Methodist Hall, the Village Hall being unavailable.
