A GRATEFUL community has raised thousands for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance after a child’s lucky crash escape.

Jessica Brooke and her family organised a family fun day in aid of the helicopter heroes after they helped fly her three-year-old son Harry to hospital.

Harry was feared dead after he was hit by a car close to the Woodman Inn at Thunderbridge in early July.

He was flown to Leeds General Infirmary by the air ambulance and amazingly recovered with almost no injuries.

Jessica, 25, has now hosted a family fun day at the Woodman Inn, raising more than £2,100 for the charity.

The family have not blamed the driver and made it clear she was not speeding.

But they have joined calls for speed bumps or a 20mph limit for the narrow village through road.

Woodman Inn boss, Craig Leslie, son of Huddersfield millionaire Graham Leslie, has even offered to pay for the humps.

Chris McHugh, manager of the hotel and restaurant, said they often saw people driving on Thunderbridge Lane at “frightening” speeds.

But Kirklees Council has so far resisted the calls as there have been no other serious incidents on the 30mph limit road.
