IT’S one of the town’s most recognisable landmarks.

And there will certainly be no chance of missing the iconic Lindley Clock Tower if a bid to light it up goes ahead.

Kirklees Council officers have been asked to prepare a feasibility report for the installation of external lighting to the Grade II listed tower and members of Huddersfield Area Committee will tonight be asked to approve funding for the study.

The building is the most prominent local work of Manchester-based architect Edgar Wood. It is considered to be one of Wood’s Art Nouveau masterpieces. Built on the corner of Lidget Street in 1902, it became a focal point for the village.

The report on the lighting to be put to councillors says: “The tower has a social, historic and architectural significance. The lighting is intended to enhance the key architectural features to promote observation and experience of the tower against the night sky.”

Clr Christine Stanfield has asked the lighting of the landmark to be considered to coincide with the Queen’s coronation celebrations next year.

The building is owned by the council and managed by the physical resources and procurement department.

A range of lighting options are available for the clock tower, but a detailed feasibility survey is needed to identify the most suitable option and associated costings.

The report will include design options and consider lamp source, location, appearance, efficiency and maintenance and it is estimated that the survey, would cost up to £2,000.

On completion of the study officers will report back to the area committee with lighting options. Members will then be asked to consider funding the scheme through the committee’s devolved budget.
