Pupils from Colne Valley High School found out more about careers in the care sector when they visited Cowlersley Court nursing home at Cowlersley.

The students, who are all studying social care, joined residents for a buffet and entertainment by Elvis impersonator David Van Leeuwen at the event held to mark National Care Home Open Day.

Beverley Harrison, who heads human resources for care home operator Eldercare (Halifax) Ltd, said the event also aimed to change perceptions about working in a care home.

“The students met the residents and got to find out more about what the job entails,” she said.

“There is an assumption that care home work is for people who cannot get a job anywhere else, but it is recognised as a profession with a chance to get qualifications and a career structure that can take you into nursing and management.”

Cowlersley Court, which has 27 residents, is one of 19 run by Eldercare in the north.

Others include ones at Fartown, Primrose Hill and Brighouse.
