A youth cricket club in Bradley has been bowled over with its new-found success.

And they are keen to attract new members - even if they have never played before - now the cricket season is in full swing.

Youth Cricket coach Mark Mitchell set up the Under 9s section at Bradley & Colnebridge Cricket Club last year.

Mark said: “I took my level 2 coaching qualification so I could offer proper coaching to all the children that attended.

“My brother Andrew has also helped me get set up and is now looking to takes his coaching badges this year.

“We got in touch with local schools through Danny Herrmann at Pennine Sports Partnership and they have given me loads of support.

“We have children who had never played cricket or even envisaged playing cricket.

“Our aim is to give these children a chance to play regardless of ability or results of the team.

“All the children that play are a pleasure to coach and are always wanting to learn new skills and to improve.

“We started last season with six players but soon turned to a squad of 11 or 12.

“With no previous playing history the children surprised everybody, including themselves, by winning games in all the tournaments they took part in and eventually reaching two finals in the last two tournaments of the season.”

And Mark and the club are now hoping to expand the club and have now added a tots team (4-6 years) and Under 11s.

“ We are now looking for more players that would be interested in playing in either age group, both boys and girls are welcome.

“We try to keep the costs as low as possible and provide the playing kit and equipment they need to participate.

“This season we have had bats kindly sponsored by James Dollive of JEDi sports and shirts sponsored by Vinny Mckenna of Madera Joinery LTD, both of these are local Huddersfield companies.

“If any other company is interested in backing us please get in touch.”

Sessions are at 102-104 Warrenside Deighton on Tuesdays with tots starting tonight 5.15pm-6pm and under 9s and under 11s 6-7pm.
