A teenage student at Royds Hall School is proving a big hit.

Yaasar Imtiaz (pictured) , the North Region Cricket captain, has been playing at the prestigious Bunbury Cricket Festival.

He was among the best young cricketers from across England who met at Durham University for the 27th Bunbury Cricket Festival.

The North East is hosting the tournament for the first time since 1979, which pits the best under 15 players in the country against each other.

The tournament is highly regarded in English cricket, with 60 former competitors having gone on to play at international level, including England captain Alistair Cook as well as Joe Root and Jimmy Anderson.

Cricket is a sport that has brought a lot of success to Royds Hall.

Over the years, the number of students gaining representative honours has increased with many representing Huddersfield and some entering the pathways programme at Yorkshire County Cricket Club.

One of the top performers at the moment is Yaasar, a Year 10 student, who last year helped Yorkshire reach the County Cup Final.

In the process, Yaasar – who plays for Birkby Rose Hill – scored a number of centuries and half centuries and at the end of the season he won the Yorkshire Under 14 batting prize.
