A cyclist is critically ill in hospital after being hit by a car.

The 69-year-old was airlifted to hospital after suffering a serious head injury following the incident in New Mill.

He is thought to have come off his bicycle after a collision with a Vauxhall Corsa on Huddersfield Road at 2.20pm yesterday.

Police have arrested the 21-year-old male driver of the car together with a 43-year-old male passenger.

The stretch of road between Ray Gate and Cold Hill Lane was closed by officers following the incident.

The cyclist was transported to Leeds General Infirmary by air ambulance and his condition last night was described as “critical”.
