A nurse has signed off after four decades of service with the NHS in Huddersfield and Calderdale.

Staff Nurse Susan Reilly from Dalton is retiring after 40 years in the NHS.

Susan, 61, began her career training as a nurse in 1973 before qualifying in 1976.

She started working on the respite ward at the former Mill Hill hospital in Huddersfield and then the former St Luke’s Hospital.

She then went on to work as a staff nurse at the stroke unit at Calderdale Royal Hospital, from where she is retiring.

Susan said: “I absolutely love being a nurse and being part of this profession.

“If I had to sum up my experience, it’s been rewarding, hard work and there has been tremendous camaraderie with the team.”

She added: “I will miss the job so much; taking care of patients was something I enjoyed.

“Also I will miss the people I have worked with; they are like my extended family and we get along so well.”

During her retirement, Susan will be going on a holiday to New York, and is planning to spend her time gardening, and with her family – her daughter Rachel and son Neale.
