THE sound of music echoed through the streets of the town last weekend when the fifth Holmfirth Festival of Folk was staged.

The event has been running for about 30 years, but this was the fifth under the current committee.

It is still attracting large numbers of traditional music lovers from near and far.

But the event has moved with the times and most recently a schools’ “fringe” has been added to the event, giving youngsters an experience of performance, and the return of spoken word readings.

Those further afield also had the chance to listen in as broadcasters from Two Valleys Radio aired their programme from The Old Bridge Inn last Saturday.

Also featuring were Morris dancers, from the Borders style of Stone the Crows from Leyland to the Mutineers of Leicester.

Particularly colourful were the Overthorpe Fireflies of Overthorpe J&I School, Dewsbury, but for those wanting less dancing and a bit more folk, there was a full programme of music.
