ROAD safety campaigners have been dealt a severe blow after council officials said their village was already safe enough.

Villagers in Birdsedge demanded urgent safety improvement measures after two recent near misses on the main A629 Penistone Road.

The first saw an out-of-control car smash through a wall just yards away from a group of children waiting for the bus, and in the second, an elderly woman narrowly escape death as she waited to cross the road.

The pensioner was dragged into the road by the down-draught of the passing heavy goods vehicle and received a nasty head wound.

Following the incident a 169-name petition was handed to the council demanding action, but Kirklees Council’s cabinet have shrugged off residents’ concerns and decided the road will not get the £150,000 needed as there had been no deaths and the average treffic speed is below the 40mph limit.
