A Lockwood man who snatched a family’s puppy in a drunken row has appeared in court.

David Harris, of Moor End Road, pleaded guilty to a charge of being drunk and disorderly in public.

He claimed that he did not like how the family were treating the eight-week-old pet.

Kirklees magistrates heard that the incident happened at an address in Park Road in Crosland Moor on July 6.

The court heard that Harris had been drinking with others before returning to their address for more drinks.

The couple living at the address had a young puppy which was there at the time.

Linda Fowler, prosecuting, said: “The defendant became aggressive and was asked to leave.

“He returned a little while later, was allowed back in and continued drinking.

“However he left the address, taking the puppy with him and they (the family) ran after him asking for the return of the dog.”

The court heard that the pet’s female owner was then threatened by Harris with a half bottle of brandy he had taken from his jacket pocket.

Police were called and found him in the street with the puppy.

The drunk 36-year-old was arrested and the pet was returned to the family.

Harris, who was not represented, told magistrates: “I didn’t like the way they were treating the puppy.

“They were throwing the puppy around and scaring it.”

Magistrates fined him £110 and told him to pay £150 court charge, £85 costs and £20 victim surcharge.
