A DEAF Scissett youngster has wrestled her way to gold.

Jodie Ounsley, 11, took home the top prize at the British Open Brazilian Ju Jitsu Championships – the most prestigious competition in the country.

The Scissett Middle School pupil won gold in front of large crowds in the U13 girls’ under 50kg category.

Brazilian Ju Jitsu looks similar to judo but is a form of fighting which focuses more on ground fighting.

The style uses techniques which enable a smaller weaker person to overcome a larger stronger opponent.

Jodie is the daughter of champion cage fighting cop Phil Ounsley.

He said: “Being deaf in this sport has not held Jodie back.

“It produces some communication issues for coaching and instruction but nothing which cannot be overcome.”

Jodie, who trains at Nova Vida Brazilian Ju Jitsu off St Andrews Road, Huddersfield, now intends to turn her focus back to athletics by competing in the Deaf Athletics Championships in Hull on Thursday.
