Global Diversity Positive Action, a social enterprise, has set its goal to empower young people to get the most out of their future.

The event is to be hosted at Deighton Sports Centre on August 11 and will include a range of activities such as a five-a-side football tournament, fashion and beauty demonstrations and health and fitness stalls.

There will also be an enterprise and education zone run in conjunction with Kirklees Council, the college, the university, Job Centre plus, National Apprenticeship Schemes, employment and regeneration projects.

GDPA’s aim is to intervene at an early level and help the individual to make lasting life changes – for example, to break the cycle of reoffending and support those youngsters who fall into the NEETs (Not in Education Employment or Training) category.

Those who sign up to the GDPA programme will also have the opportunity to experience work placement that will be found in their area of interest. Placement will last for a minimum of two weeks where the individual will be able to achieve objectives that will be agreed with their mentor.

The work placement is the key time where all the theory that has been learnt so far can be put into practice.

So far 10 candidates have already completed the GDPA programme and have gone on to find courses or employment.

One of them is Kadean Fogarthy, 21, who having ‘brushes’ with the law had a BTEC Sport Science Diploma at Huddersfield New College but couldn’t get a job.

Kadean wanted to improve himself and have a career as a sports coach and due to his involvement with GDPA is now undertaking a sports apprenticeship at Leeds United Football Club.

The event will run from 9.45am-5pm on August 11 at Deighton Sports Centre.
