SPEED limits could be raised on motorways to 80 miles per hour, says the Transport Secretary.

This may seem strange to people who use the motorway on an occasional basis, like me, as, judging by the speed of the vehicles in the fast lane I was under the impression there was no speed limit at all.

We all know that speed limits are ignored if motorists think they can get away with it. Whole chunks of traffic speed up and slow down between those yellow boxed cameras.

I experienced a wonderful example of kangaroo driving the other day on the Elland by-pass.

A high powered Audi purred past me as if I was standing still as we exited the tunnel and headed downhill.

It braked for the camera halfway down, then accelerated again to repeat the manoeuvre every time a yellow box hove into view.

To be fair, the 70 mile per hour motorway limit has been in effect since 1965 when you were lucky if you had a car that could go that fast, and limits in Europe are much higher, so it can probably do with a tweak.

It was, after all, supposed to be an experimental measure when it was first imposed.

The Transport Secretary at least seems to be being sensible about speed.

He is also considering lowering the limit from 30 to 20 in busy urban areas, where speed really does kill.
