Walkers and ramblers can enjoy the sights and sounds of North Kirklees.

Dewsbury & District Rambling Club has compiled a 28-mile walk to celebrate its 100th anniversary.

The Centenary Walk weaves its way around North Kirklees, starting and finishing at Dewsbury Minster, the town’s parish church. But the 28-mile route has been split into six separate ‘bite-sized’ walks.

Club president Malcolm Haigh said the group had been working on the walk for the last two years.

The whole walk incorporates a route through Thornhill, Briestfield, Lower Whitley, Lower Hopton and Mirfield, then onto Battyeford, Hartshead, Rawfolds, Gomersal and Birstall, followed by Howden Clough, Upper Batley, Howley, Soothill and Hanging Heaton.

Two or three different people were sent out across the district’s countryside to map the route. These routes were then handed on to an experienced walker to follow. Historical landmarks were also added.

Once the group was happy, they worked with Kirklees Council officials and countryside volunteers to erect new directional signs on the route.

Photographs were then taken by Brian Asquith and Sian Addison and the result has seen the publication of map cards which are available free of charge from libraries, sports centres and council offices. Production was funded by grants from Yorkshire Building Society and North Kirklees area committees.

A key feature is that the start and finish of each individual walk is well served by local bus services.
