I WAS very sorry to hear of the death of Kathy Staff. My condolences to her family, friends and all at LTSW. She will be sorely missed.

At the same time I do hope it is not the end of the ’Summer Wine. It has been my favourite programme for many years. Incidentally I never thought the BBC gave the series the justice it deserved. Hardly ever any repeats, could not another channel take it on?

With all the violence and nastiness on the box, Last Of The Summer Wine is like a breath of fresh air.

Roy Clarke is a brilliant writer, I feel it is owed to him and to the cast and crew remaining and I am sure Kathy would be happy for it to carry on as would the rest of the gone, but not forgotten ones that have sadly passed on.

Come and support Town

I WOULD like to congratulate Dean Hoyle on the new management team he has brought in. I now think we have the set up to take us to a higher level and put pride back into the supporters and into the Town.

I have supported Town for over 70 years, and seen many ups and downs in that time. I was beginning to think I would never see Town playing at a higher level again. I now feel excited and looking forward to the future.

I would like to pay tribute to Gerry Murphy and his team for the excellent work they have carried out over the years. Five league wins out of six, and three away wins on the trot; he is truly a great servant of the club.

I hope all season ticket holders will come down on Saturday and other supporters as well, and give Dean Hoyle, the new management and the players a great reception.

Make Murphy a Freeman of Town

WHILE I'm sure you will have received numerous letters in this regard I wish to add my own very heartfelt thanks to Gerry and Graham for stepping once more into the Town breach and doing such a sterling job.

The football has been great to watch and I’m convinced that had he had the luxury of honing this style up from the beginning of the season we’d have not only now been riding high at the top of the division but neither would we have lost one of our most loved players 'D Mirfin'.

So sad he's not with us (I'll never forgive Ternent for that travesty) for what I'm sure is going to be a fabulous (even if scary at times) ride with new manager Lee Clark and Co.

However the main point of this letter is to flag up to the HTFC powers that be to make G Murphy a complete FREEMAN of Huddersfield Town for life .. what a gem he's been and one of us too .. gorgeous to have you around Gerry, just keep on keeping on.

We need another supermarket

I HAVE read with interest, the numerous letters printed on this page, in response to the proposals being made by Tesco, to redevelop the former filling station and retail outlet at the former Midlothian Garage (in existence since 1946) BETWEEN New Mill and Holmfirth.

When I visited the civic hall to observe the proposals it was obvious that traffic lights would have to be incorporated at the new access junction.

My feelings about the proposed traffic lights are that New Mill Road will become a safer place for both pedestrians and motorists by slowing down the idiots who use New Mill Road as a race track

The secondary school pupils are at least eleven-years-old and only use the pavements on New Mill Road for about half an hour on school days.

I find that children of this age are not stupid and should not be used as an excuse for not bringing sensible competition to the Holmfirth area.

The area deserves a competitive food store and filling station to avoid having to waste time and expense, finding value in other areas, often as much as six miles away.

This is the 21st century and surely, Holmfirth residents should be part of it. We also require the new job opportunities and I support the Tesco plans.

Holmfirth resident for over 60 years.
