A MAN in his 20s was seriously injured in a high-speed crash near Waterloo – minutes after he failed to stop for police.
The driver became trapped in the vehicle when it ploughed through railings and trees and crashed in Cross Green Road, off Wakefield Road.
He was released by fire crews after 20 minutes and treated by paramedics at the scene.
Huddersfield Watch Commander Mark Hurd said: “The vehicle had left the road at speed and gone through railing and trees and landed on its side. It was quite badly damaged.
“There was a member of the public who had climbed into the vehicle when we arrived and was talking to the driver.
“He had suffered serious head injuries but was conscious.
“It took us about 20 minutes to get the driver out.”
He remains in Huddersfield Royal Infirmary in a stable condition.
A police spokesman said: “Shortly before 8pm on Tuesday police sighted a vehicle driving at speed on Wakefield Road, Huddersfield.
“The vehicle failed to stop and made off from police.
“Officers began to follow the vehicle but lost sight of it shortly afterwards.
“A short time later the vehicle was found to have left the road and collided with a fence on Cross Green Road, Huddersfield, close to the junction with Wakefield Road.
“The male driver, a 24-year-old, believed to be the only occupant of the vehicle, was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary with serious injuries. He is currently in a stable condition.”
