The Duke of York presented an award to the chairman of a Skelmanthorpe-based charity sports and community group.

The Dearne Valley Sports Village has been named as one of just 43 recipients of a prestigious, county wide community initiative award.

The Duke of York’s Community Initiative is presented annually to a small number of Yorkshire-based organisations that having been subjected to rigorous and robust scrutiny are deemed: “of real value to the community, well run and an inspiration to others”.

The sports village project aims to provide a multi-purpose community facility for all ages and abilities on 23 acres of former mining land, leased from Kirklees Council.

The award was presented to Christopher Ward, chairman of Parkgate Sports and Community Trust Ltd, at the ceremony at the Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham.
