Two friends from Emley have just retired after meeting as nursing cadets in 1964 and notching up 100 years between them.

Lesley Fairbrother and Dianne Barraclough first met while training at Clayton Hospital in Wakefield.

They became friends, both passed their training to become State Registered Nurses and continued as staff nurses at the hospital.

Both were married in the early 1970s and were bridesmaids for each other.

Lesley married Roger Schofield, a friend of Dianne’s brother, David. They have three sons, Timothy, Peter and Philip and are now grandparents to Jack and Rosie.

Dianne was remarried in 1987 to Andrew Hughes and they have one son, James.

Lesley continued to work in the Wakefield area, eventually becoming a practice nurse at the Middlestown Health Centre from where she has just retired.

Dianne moved about to Huddersfield but eventually settled at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield where she has spent the last 33 years as a night matron.
