THIS week’s heatwave could make it the warmest March in Huddersfield for more than half a century.

Temperatures again reached 21°C yesterday, but cooler weather is likely today and tomorrow.

And that is expected to bring the average for the month slightly down, although it is still likely to have been the warmest March since 1990.

Salendine Nook weather expert Paul Stevens said the average figure for 1954 had been 8.3°C and this month could well approach that.

He thinks it more likely it will stay at 8.1°C, making it the warmest March for 22 years.

“It has certainly been a mini heatwave and made it very pleasant,” said Paul.

“I have trawled through the records and it looks like being the warmest for years, possibly since 1954.

“But it will change today and into the weekend, with cooler, fresher weather although still dry.

“And as we head towards Easter, it will drop even colder – with the possibility of minus temperatures at night, rain and even wintry showers.

“We will be getting winds from the Arctic and they will be noticeably colder.”
