TESCO has learned how to marshal local support in order to counter the organised opposition which almost always greets its damaging proposals.

This does not make the proposals any less dangerous.

The damage which a Tesco store near a town but separated from it inflicts is clearly documented. The only cases where the damage may not occur are those rare examples where the Tesco store is located in the town centre.

Otherwise, its parasitic presence destroys what has come to be called the footfall of the town the number of people who actually go there.

By its actions Tesco confirms the parasitic nature of its proposals. Tesco will not go well away from towns, is very reluctant to locate in town centres and simply insists in sitting like a bloated spider on the outskirts of the town so it may profit by sucking out its lifeblood.

Say yes to Tesco

WITH reference to the letters in this weeks Examiner please Kirklees council say yes to Tesco.

This area needs this shop which will give the Cooperative in Holmfirth something to think about.

Having a Tesco will increase the number of people in the area and make Holmfirth busy instead of it being a town which is getting quieter by the day.

As for creating new jobs in the area, it will get people back into work and training, giving people something to work towards and then there will be less people unemployed.

So bring Tesco to Holmfirth and everyone who is against the store coming to the area will not want to use it but you will find a lot of people will be very grateful for a new supermarket with fresh products and happy and friendly staff.

Car park letdown

HEAR, hear Michael Armitage (Shopkeepers holding Holmfirth to ransom, letters January 17.)

Just one more point about the Cooperative. I put my money in the parking meter a few months back and got no ticket.

I complained in the Coop and they were very quick to point out that the car park was nothing to do with them (how many supermarkets dont have their own car parks).

They said I would have to ring up the owners of the car park which would have cost me more than I lost.

Of course, you can have your charge refunded by spending s4 or more in the Coop. No good for just popping in for a few items then!

More empty shops

I NOTE with interest that the La Senza shop in Kingsgate opened with such hype may well be closing (if it has not already done so, I cant keep up!) so leaving that and its previous premises on New Street empty. I am waiting with bated breath for the no doubt over-hyped opening in Kingsgate of the new Clarks shoe shop which no doubt will leave an empty shop on The Piazza.

No bullying please!

IVE been a fan of Huddersfield Town since I was a child and have followed with interest the Hoyle v Davy shares saga over the last few weeks and have, like many fans of Town, been sympathetic towards Mr Hoyle and his plight to have the shares returned to the club.

I was, however, disgusted at the group of supporters who were patrolling the catering outlets at the Oldham game, heckling anyone in the queue who fancied a pie/pint/coffee etc.

The word scab was shouted at one chap with his two kids as they walked away with their purchases.

Some of us just want to pay our money, enjoy the game and refuse to be bullied.

Is it so simple?

DESPITE not being an attendee at the Galpharm Stadium I prefer to support my local village team on a Saturday after seeing the various articles published in the Examiner may I make some observations?

1. Neither Town nor the Giants would be where they are without Ken Davy.

2. Town would not be where they are without Dean Hoyle.

3. When Huddersfield Town Hall or any municipal building is hired there is usually a fixed rate for rental which is known in advance by all parties, and this is not, I believe, dependent upon the number of tickets likely to be sold.

4. Why a 15:13 ratio? Why 15 and 13?

5. If, during negotiations, one party suddenly decides that certain factors/items are non-negotiable does he not forfeit the moral high ground/goodwill?

6. If the sticking point for Dean Hoyle is about s25,000, isnt it worth paying just to get the shares back and Ken Davy off his back?

Or is it not that simple?

Shepley,

Ken Davy saved Town

IF it wasnt for Ken Davy there wouldnt be a Huddersfield Town. I hope the fans support their chairman better than they did at Old Trafford when all the shirts finished up on the pitch.

They have short memories. Just be thankful youve got a stadium to play in.

Protecting green land

I REPLY to the comments of January 12 by Clr Nicola Turner (Colne Valley) and her intimation the local Conservative Party has not truly listened to the voice of local people when furthering our present day green credentials.

Clr Turner insinuates that the Lib-Dems are the green political saviours of Kirklees and our beautiful valleys that surround us.

What utter nonsense.

Throughout the last two years of the Local Development Framework (LDF) campaign I have furthered our Colne Valleys green goals and resistance to the councils plans through representatives both at a local and national level.

This in liaison with local action groups throughout Kirklees and, in particular, the Colne Valley peoples group who have played a dominant role within the no to green development campaign that has seen a significant reduction from the original 37,000 homes figure.

Indeed, (if elected) I will continue actively opposing the final Kirklees (LDF) decision (to be held 2012/13) and these ill-devised council plans that the Lib Dems together with their bedfellows the Labour Party, the Greens and the Independents voted for the amendment to build 22,470 new homes throughout Kirklees with many on green field and Green Belt sites.

The Conservatives were the only ones to say no to building on any Green Belt as our policy is to build on former industrial sites first.

The difference of 4,000 less houses that we proposed was to eliminate all building on Green Belt etc.

Moreover, following the November 23 2011 (LDF) Council meeting, the Examiner reported that Clr Turner had made the case for her partys plan to allow 22,470 homes, including 1,500 on Green Belt land in Dewsbury and 500 in Chidwell between Dewsbury and Batley.

So, is Clr Turner now saying to thousands of Kirklees residents that the policy is OK but not in our own backyard?

If the revised Conservative plans due to the meaningful consultations held within many Kirklees local communities between 2009-2011 had been accepted, it would have seen a marked reduction of the envisaged homes and no greenfield or Green Belt within the Colne Valley being allocated for development.

Turbines spoiling valley

NOW that Kirklees Planners have called a belated halt to the industrialisation of Scapegoat Hill by refusing the latest application for a wind turbine, the countryside desecrators have inevitably turned their attention to Slaithwaite Moor.

Presumably the planned monitoring mast will indicate ideal wind for several monstrous turbines like new the ones at Carlecotes behind Hepworth pipe works.

Then where, Deer Hill? Then Crosland Hill?

And so on until the entire Colne Valley is defiled?

Lunacy of windpower

IT appears that, following a severe winter during which our precious wind turbines could not produce enough electricity to power a one-bar electric fire, the National Grid has been paying wind farms s25million to shut down their turbines because they were producing more electricity than the grid could cope with owing to, erm, too much wind.

That cost has been passed on to the power companies who, in turn, pass it on to consumers.

So, dear billpayers, we are being charged simultaneously for electricity and for no electricity.

Is there someone out there who can call a halt to this lunacy?
