IT was a simple yet moving ceremony and one which summed up the feelings of a whole town.

The hundreds who gathered in Golcar yesterday were there with a common purpose; to let people know they will never forget Huddersfield’s young heroes who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

And how fitting it was that many relatives and friends of the six soldiers from the town who have died in the bitter Afghanistan conflict were able to draw solace from the day.

They were there to see a plaque commemorating all the victims unveiled and spoke with heartfelt thanks to those who had organised the tribute.

The grieving relatives have borne the suffering over the past few weeks and months with enormous courage and dignity, and have shown time and time again their enormous pride in what their sons and daughter had achieved.

It is fitting, too, that the people of Huddersfield ensure the memories of the brave six - and of the many hundreds more who have been killed in Afghanistan - never fade.
