The Friends of Tolson & Ravensknowle celebrated Heritage Weekend, (a week early), by walking from Tolson Museum to Castle Hill and back.

The footpath from Tolson Museum to the centre of Almondbury was commissioned by the Friends and supported by Huddersfield Area Committee.

It joins the already marked trail from Almondbury to Castle Hill.

The walk starts with the climb up to Almondbury through ‘Spider Alley’.

In the village members looked at several medieval buildings, paused at the centre of the village to look at the War Memorial, the famous Wormall Hall and the Grade I listed All Hallows’ Church.

They passed the ‘Town Hall’, library, the old school and the Edgar Wood designed Clergy House.

At Broken Cross they puzzled over the name and why there was a cross and how it became broken.

They climbed the Victoria Tower on Castle Hill and enjoyed the most fantastic views.

On the far horizon they could see a faint white smudge which they were assured was Kilburn Bank, 60 miles away.

Returning to Broken Cross they walked down the lovely Penny Spring Woods to Kidroyd, across to Ravensknowle and finally back to the Museum.

There is a leaflet describing the walk from Almondbury to Castle Hill available at Kirklees Information Centre.

A description of the trail from Tolson to Almondbury is in the process of completion.
