PEOPLE living in Lindley will be able to get into the carnival spirit once again thanks to funding.

Huddersfield Area Committee has agreed to contribute £3,500 towards the annual event.

Each summer the community is brought together for the day of traditional carnival activities.

The funding was sought by the Lindley Community Group.

This is composed of groups including the Scouts, youth groups, local schools and businesses from the area.

These groups raise money for, set up and run the carnival.

The money will cover costs of hiring essential facilities.

These include provision of portable toilets, stage and sound equipment and reusable publicity materials.

Lindley councillor Cahal Burke said: “I am pleased that the committee has agreed to the much needed funding.

“The money will be used to provide essential facilities to make the annual event a success once again.”

The carnival was started in 1945 and was revived in 2006 after a gap of 33 years.

Earlier this year the family event coincided with two important national events – the successful Olympic Games and the poignant Armed Forces Day.

Events were focussed around these themes.

Mr Burke said: “The next carnival will have a change of theme and will be more of a musical event.

“Some schools and choirs have already come forward and are committing their support.

“However, more local support is crucial in making the carnival happen.”

The Community Group welcomes enquiries from anyone who can volunteer or offer support.
