A fundraiser to help cancer sufferers has been a real family affair.

Staff at Burhouse Beads and Rockshop Wholesale have raised over £2,000.

The money will be donated to Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, the only UK charity solely dedicated to research into blood cancers.

The charity is particularly close to the hearts of members of the Oakes-based business.

Louise Macleod, the managing director of Burhouse Beads, has been receiving treatment for Hodgkin's lymphoma since February 2012.

At the time she was busy with two young children and working in the family beads and jewellery findings business.

And despite her illness she has managed to make a success of children’s jewellery making kits Pippin Kits, which are now sold in John Lewis stores.

She is also determined to support the charity in its mission help the 30,000 people diagnosed every year with a blood cancer.

And her loved ones are keen to help.

Libby Leach, who works at Louise’s business in Quarmby Mills, said: “As a local businesswoman, Louise wanted her company to help raise as much money as possible for the charity.

“With the help of her brother Johnny Burhouse, managing director of the neighbouring Rockshop Wholesale, they decided to do a raffle and donate some great prizes.”

Their brother Richard donated his bone marrow for Louise’s transplant treatment which she is currently undergoing.

He is the owner of the Magic Rock brewery, also based at the Tanyard Road site.

Richard has been donating beer for various events in support of the charity.

Libby added: “It’s a true family affair.

“The Burhouse family are proud of their achievements and months of raising money.”

At Burhouse a special fun day was held, when raffle prizes including Amethyst Geodes and a treasure chest of beads, were handed out.

Louise previously held a fundraising evening for her 35th birthday at a restaurant.
