Budding math geniuses showed their skills as part of a national maths challenge.

Dozens of students aged from nine to 16-years-old from Moor End Academy and their feeder schools South Crosland CoE VA Junior School, Helme CoE (VA) Junior and Infant School, Mount Pleasant Junior School and Crosland Moor Junior School put their heads together in the Jaguar Cars in Motion Maths Challenge at Moor End Academy to solve puzzles related to the Grand Prix and created their own computer generated racing cars. They then put them to the test in a simulated race to see if their designs made the grade.

And it was South Crosland Junior School’s pupils Matthew Burke, Madeleine Snyder, Fiza Iqbal and Dominic Vesely who won the race and will now go forward to take place in the nationwide contest. Their school received an engraved glass trophy and all students received Jaguar Maths Challenge certificates.

Donna Wilson, who supported the South Crosland students, said, “It was great to see the children coming together as a team as the day progressed.”

Year five student, Madeleine Snyder, said: “I couldn’t believe we won”.
