Growing enthusiasts have dug, weeded and sowed their way to glory.

Allotment tenants in the Kirkburton area have competed for the parish council’s annual best plot competition at each of its sites at Grange Moor and Shepley.

Judged by Graham Porter, a renowned gardening expert and former gardening columnist of the Huddersfield Examiner, entrants were assessed on their variety and quality of the crops grown, as well as the organisation of the plot.

Mr Porter had quite a tough job picking out just two winners at each site, but after much consideration he announced the winners and runners up as follows: Grange Moor: Lynn Willis/Roz Pering and Jane Greetham/Carole Scott. Shepley: Raymond Horn, Christine/Mellor Trudy Mansfield.

Parish council chair, Clr Cass Whittingham, said: “I’m pleased that the competitions continue to be popular amongst our allotment tenants.

“Looking at all the entries, I’m surprised that Graham has managed to establish the winners, as they are all in such a good condition.”

The prizes of gardening vouchers and rosettes were presented at the Council’s Civic Sunday event.
