Government minister visits Moor End Academy to see progress in maths and science

Elizabeth Truss, Under-Secretary of State at Department of Education, visits Moorend Academy, Huddersfield - in Maths class with Colne Valley MP Jason McCartney and students Sadia Mosaddeq and Samha Rani.

Beaumont Park pupils scored top grades from a Government minister when she visited their school.

Pupils at the outstanding-graded Moor End Academy welcomed Elizabeth Truss to show her the progress they are making in mathematics and science.

The visit was taken alongside a trip to Rastrick High School, just before the former Conservative under-secretary of State for Education and Childcare was upgraded to Environment Secretary. She was joined by the Colne Valley Conservative MP Jason McCartney, who met with dozens of students and staff at the afternoon event.

Assistant principal, Debra Awty, said: “The focus of the visit was to observe outstanding practice in mathematics and science in an outstanding academy, in line with the Government’s drive to increase focus on traditional, examination-led qualifications at 16.”

“Elizabeth Truss had a keen personal interest in the teaching of mathematics and it was her intention to increase the statutory time spent on mathematics in the curriculum.”
