ALL power to Clr Tony Brice’s elbow (Mailbag, February 9) for fighting to have roads in his ward repaired, but perhaps he should avoid using Birkby Road as an example of the Conservatives’ commitment to improving our highways.

To paraphrase the councillor: Anyone who has travelled on that road before and after will know that the Conservatives are clearly only half-heartedly committed to improving our roads.

Anyone who travels on that road will know that Birkby Road, halfway down, becomes Birkby Hall Road. And guess what! The repairs stop where one road runs into the other. The former is indeed fully reconstructed, while the latter, I believe belonging to Greenhead Ward, is a patchwork of temporary repairs and scenic potholes. Perhaps what the Conservatives are really only committed to is placating the councillor who shouts the loudest!
