Students brought some friendly rivalry to a charity competition.

Hipperholme and Lightcliffe High School students worked hard to attract donations and sponsorship in a project that raised £892 for charity.

The school’s Health and Social Care Health promotion took place at the end of term with inter-department competition among Year 10 BTEC, Year 12 A-Level and Year 12 BTEC students.

They had to create and produce an event which raised awareness of any health issue of their choice and then analyse the event afterwards for their coursework.

Participating students were competitive from the start and wanted to out-do one another to raise the most money complementing their subject choice.

Year 10 chose to raise awareness of smoking and drinking and raised money for The Macular Society which helps support teens with visual impairments caused by smoking, Year 12 A-Level chose to raise awareness of skin cancer and melanoma which, in a warm summer week that included schools Sports Day, raised money for Cancer Research and Melanoma Focus, while Year 12 BTEC raised awareness of mental health in support of Mind Charity.

They secured donations from high street and independent retailers and put them into raffles, while fundraisers including a tug of war competition, bun sale and henna tattooing added to the £892.86 pot.

The Year 12 A-Level class won the group challenge of contributing the most to the total.
