A group of dedicated students have seen their hard work grow.

Pupils at Hipperholme and Lightcliffe High School students have been working throughout their summer holidays to create a small but wonderful vegetable plot at school.

And in its first year it has already produced some truly spectacular vegetables.

Most of this year’s crop has now been harvested with a festival of healthy looking goods turned into vegetable soup, ratatouille and pickles.

Some of the harvest has been sold to staff to ensure the group has funds to buy essential equipment and seeds for next season .

It’s boosted the school’s kitchen team who have put the crop on the dinner menu.

And the Food Technology department have blanched and frozen a batch of French beans to be used by senior students for their recipe development and research into locally produced and sourced foods, which is part of the A level course of study. “You can’t get any closer than our than the school garden” said Mrs Stead, Food Technology Teacher.

Both the school’s kitchen and Food Technology department provide organic waste to top up the compost bins guaranteeing a rich mixture for next year’s garden.
