Cyclists are gearing up for an annual fundraising event which has come of age.

The Holme Valley Mountain Bike Challenge is in its 21st year and has raised more than £25,000 down the years.

Founded by Andrew Armitage and Tim and Yvonne Radcliffe, of 1st Holme Valley Scouts, the challenge boosts Scout group coffers.

More than 400 riders are set to take part in this year’s event, which will be staged on Sunday .

Cyclists from the age of 12 upwards pay an entry fee of £15 in advance or £20 on the day.

Proceeds go to 1st Holme Valley Scouts but sizeable donations are made to Holme Valley Mountain Rescue and St John Ambulance.

Some riders are sponsored for their own good causes.

The ride, which starts and finishes at Hade Edge Recreation Ground, has three routes around the Holme Valley – 16 miles, 21 miles and 32 miles.

The ride starts at 9am prompt.

Mr Armitage, who still organises the event, said: “We never thought, when we launched the challenge all those years ago, that it would be so successful.

“It’s not a race but people have become very competitive and come back year after year and try to beat their time.”
