Holme Valley Civic Society will be holding the launch of its latest publication, Miners and Mining in the New Mill Valley, at New Mill Club, Sheffield Road, on Thursday October 23.
The previously unrecorded story of the lives of the men, women and children who worked in local pits is presented in the book written by Pamela Cooksey and Alan Tinsdeall.
Information relating to this little known aspect of valley life – such as the location and nature of the pits, the coal proprietors and the impact of local mining activity on valley life – is also detailed.
The launch will be accompanied by an exhibition of photographs, maps and pit plans.
People with relevant photos and memorabilia are invited to bring them on the day.
Miners and Mining in the New Mill Valley is available from Holmfirth Tourist Information Centre, priced £8.
