BROCKHOLES

The 47th annual meeting of Brockholes WI was held in the Methodist church parlour. Nominations and business for next year's committee were followed by the President's report given by Zita Crossley. The secretary’s and treasurer's reports were read by Elizabeth Mosley and Margaret Brinley. Christine Hazle then thanked all the committee for their hard work over the past year. Special speaker Hilary Marchant gave an informative talk to members about Bowen Therapy. She then handed out leaflets and answered questions from the members. The meeting closed with a faith supper.

Parish communion at St George’s Church was celebrated by the Rev David Barnes. Josephine Swallow read the lessons and Rosalind Watt was the server. The organist was Noel Clarke.

The young people of the AD Group met for a sports and games evening under the leadership of Val Tipling. Other leaders were Sue Clay, Verena Wood and Caroline Lee.

Mrs Jo Brand led worship at the Methodist Church. The readers were Janet and Paul Grant. The organist was Mr Michael Brown.

HEPWORTH

The Rev Keith Griffin celebrated parish eucharist on Sunday morning. Prayers were led by Simon Cave, the reader was church treasurer Graham Latham and the organist was Jane Robertson. Sunday School was led by Chris Fletcher.

On Tuesday evening, members of the Hepworth Ladies Group enjoyed a Desert Island Discs evening at the home of Ruth Brook who, during the course of the evening, served tea and cake for those ‘stranded’.

Hepworth Junior and Infant School held their Harvest Service in Hepworth Church on Thursday morning, under the supervision of headteacher Linda Goodall. Parents, grandparents and friends made up the congregation for this annual service.

HOLMBRIDGE

Holmbridge Women’s Institute met for a talk on The World of Antiques by Derrick Sanderson.

The Camera Club met for the Epson Roadshow.

Midweek communion at St David’s Church was led by the Rev Nick Heaton when lessons were read by Ian Gold.

Meetings of the Monkey Business, Tumble Tots and free lunch and over 60s club were held during the week. Friday evening prayers were taken by the Rev Geoff Bamford.

St David’s autumn fair and cafe was held in the parish hall and raised £1,200 for church funds.

Sunday early communion at St David’s Church was conducted by the Rev Geoff Bamford. He also led parish eucharist when lessons were read by Susan Barber and Sally Darley. Intercessions were led by Ian Gold and the chalice was administered by Dorothy Parker. The creche and junior church were led by Helen and Dale Woods. The organist was Eddie Purcell.

HOLMFIRTH

Last Sunday’s worship at Holmfirth Methodist Church was led by the Rev Laura Hardy, assisted by Linda Kitson’s worship team. Following a dramatised reading based on Genesis 2, the Rev Hardy put several questions to the congregation for discussion. These included: Is God in charge of your life? If not, who is? and What are the implications of this decision? In Junior Church, the children heard the story of Jesus healing the ten lepers, when only one returned to say thank-you. The children then made their own thank-you cards.

The Twentieth Sunday after Trinity was celebrated at Holy Trinity Church with 10.30am Parish Eucharist when the Rev Keith Griffin was the celebrant. He was assisted with the chalice by Linda Whitaker who also led the Intercessions. Diane Whitford read from2 Timothy Ch 3 v14-4.5. Keith spoke about prayer – there is no expectation on us, prayer begins in us because God is within us, we need to prayer for what we need first. Kay Booth was sidesperson and Keith and Alex Jones serves coffee after the service. Alison Kitch and Audrey Dalton led the Sunday Club in the Gallery Room. Jane played the organ.

HONLEY

Family communion at St Mary’s Church was celebrated by the Rev David Barnes. Graham Wardman read the lesson. Intercessions were led by Jane and Graham Wardman. The organist was Vernon Briggs.

On Saturday evening in St Mary's Church, Yorkshire Traction Honley Band, under conductor Wayne Bostwick, and Honley Male Voice Choir, conducted by Keith Roberts with George Marsden as accompanist, gave a concert which raised £800 for St Mary’s boiler fund.

UPPERTHONG

The Tuesday morning prayer breakfast was held at the home of the Dawsons. The Rev Keith Griffin conducted the communion service on Thursday at St John’s Church. Lunch followed in the meeting room.

Family communion at St John’s Church was led by the Rev Val Clarke, who read the gospel, preached the sermon and was the celebrant. The readers were Hilary Roberts and Sue Legg. Prayers were given by Sue Dawson, who also assisted with the chalice. The organist was Ian Greenhalgh. Refreshments were served by Hilary Roberts afterwards.

WILSHAW

The October meeting of Wilshaw Village Institute was held in the village hall. Mrs Faulds was in the chair and amongst business discussed were plans for the Christmas lunch. Speaker Marion Gray talked about her jewellery and how she began and progressed to making the wide selection of work that she now produced. Members enjoyed looking at – and buying – from the exhibition of pieces she had made. She was thanked by Mrs Fielding and tea and biscuits were served.

WOOLDALE

Morning worship at the Methodist Church was led by the Rev Laura Hardy, who also administered the sacrament. The organist was Nigel Morris.

The monthly social event took the form of a table top games evening organised by Dilys Williams.
