The First World War had such a profound impact on the Holme Valley that a hospital – Holme Valley Memorial Hospital – was built in honour of those who lost their lives during the conflict.

And the lasting effect of The Great War is why Holme Valley Parish Council is planning a series of events to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the war in which scores of valley men lost their lives.

The centenary committee, chaired by parish councillor Trevor Bellamy, plans a parade and memorabilia market in Holmfirth as part of the programme which is scheduled for September.

The committee is hoping to show a World War One slide show and newsreels shot between 1914 and 1918, including a film of troops going away to war.

There will be re-enactments of the farewell parties valley villagers held for local servicemen before they were shipped over to fight in mainland Europe. And churches across Holme Valley will be holding services to remember those who served their country in the first fully industrialised war.

So far the committee has been working with business association Holmfirth Enterprise and Development (HEAD) and civic societies to organise the events.

But Mr Bellamy is hoping valley businesses and individuals will be able to supply memorabilia and artefacts from the war and help stage official, as well as their own, events.

Mr Bellamy said: “We’ve a lot of ideas and lots of people’s support and willingness to participate.

“I hope we will be doing the veterans and victims of World War One an honour.

“Since I started on it, it’s been amazing what has turned up. If you want to support the event in any way please get in touch.”
