BROCKHOLES

Members of St George’s Church enjoyed a time of informal family worship at Brockholes Village Hall. The Rev Jenny Barnes led the service and as part of a talk on St David invited the congregation to take part in a quiz about the saint. Prizes of daffodils and leeks were given in accordance with the Welsh theme. Roger Kenworthy read the lesson. Hymns and songs were accompanied by the music group. The service was followed by a light lunch of soup and sandwiches.

HEPWORTH

Members of Hepworth Church attended an informal evening at the Quaker Meeting House in Wooldale. Soup and roll lunches were served in the meetingroom at Hepworth Church on Friday between noon and 1.30pm. Parish Eucharist was celebrated by the Rev Keith Griffin at Holy Trinity Church on Sunday morning. The sermon was preached by the Rev Val Clarke, the reader was Jane Selkirk and prayers were led by Cheryl Roberts. Hilary Fletcher assisted with the chalice during communion, and the organ was played by Jane Robertson. Coffee was served after the service by Doreen Glover and Gwen Holmes.

HOLMBRIDGE

Three's Company on Monday took the form of an old-fashioned sing-along with light refreshments. The organiser was Carolyn Burley. Midweek Holy Communion at St David’s Church was led by the Rev Nick Heaton. Lessons were read by the Rev Geoff Bamford. Meetings of the Monkey Business and the free lunch and over 60s club were also held. The first of the Lent courses took place on Thursday led by the Rev Nick Heaton. Friday evening prayers were conducted by Ian Gold. A Worship Together service at St David’s Church on Sunday was led by the Rev Nick Heaton. Lessons were read by Nathan Heaton and Ian Gold. Intercessions were led by Carolyn Burley and Carole Heaton. The organist was Eddie Purcell. Evensong was led by the Rev Geoff Bamford when the pianist was Audrey Brook.

HOLMFIRTH

Services at Holmfirth Methodist Church on the first Sunday in Lent began with an early Holy Communion led by the Rev Charlotte Lorimer. Morning worship began with placing the first symbols, bread and wine, on the Lenten Cross. A carefully structured service followed led by the Rev Richard Thompson from Scholes, assisted by members of the appointed worship team. The Rev Richard explained the meaning of the Rainbow Covenant with the help of a dramatic intervention by Noah, ably portrayed by Nick Martin. Bible readings from Sheila Talbot and Margaret Hinchliffe were followed by a dramatic interpretation of The Testing of Jesus read by Teresa and Chris Turner and Sheila and Denis Talbot. The theme of the Rev Richard’s address was The Good News IS Jesus. As usual the congregational singing was accompanied by organ, piano and percussion provided by Barbara Verity, Carol Hamer, Pete Strawson and Isaac Robinson. After the service participants were thanked for their help and the congregation were invited to coffee and biscuits in the community room served by The Men’s Mob! In the evening the Youth club held a pancake evening.

SCHOLES

On Sunday, February 26 the congregation at the Methodist Church were greeted at the door by Wilf and David, and Barbara Horn played the organ. Neil Ward was the preacher and June Snow read from the Bible. The passages were Genesis chapter 9 verses 8-17 and Mark chapter 1 verses 9-15. The Bible reading formed the theme for the sermon “Gods Covenant and God as our Father – You are my Son whom I love, with you I am well pleased”. Coffee and biscuits were served after the service by Margaret Hill, June Trott and Cynthia Osborne. At a meeting of the Men’s Monday Club of Scholes Methodist Church, Mr Wilf Battye gave a talk entitled Adventures in Pakistan.

On Sunday, March 4 the Steward for the day Jane Cannon read out the notices and welcomed Michael Tolson to preach the service. Julia Noble and Jane Trumble welcomed the congregation at the door and Christine Lockwood played the organ. The lessons read were Genesis chpt17 v1-7 and v 15 and 16 by Barbara Horn and the new testament reading was Mark chpt8 v31-38. The theme of the sermon was based on the old testament reading depicting Gods Covenant with Abrahim; coffee and biscuits were served by Mabel Wadsworth and Margaret and Richard Thompson.

UPPERTHONG

The Tuesday prayer breakfast was held at the home of the Dawsons. Lent groups were held on Tuesday afternoon and Thursday evening. Holy Communion on Thursday at St John's Church was led by the Rev Di Ellerton, who was also the celebrant. A Lent lunch was held in the meeting room.

Early communion on Sunday at St John’s Church was conducted by the Rev Di Ellerton, who also led family worship when the reader was Karen Beattie. The Drummond family music group accompanied the singing. Coffee was served afterwards by Sue Dawson. Following the main service, the annual parochial church council meeting was held under the chairmanship of the Rev Di Ellerton. Reports were given by Sue Dawson of the Mothers’ Union and by Graham Dawson for team council. Hilary Broadbent presented the biennial report and audited accounts. Elections took place and Alvin Schorah and Hilary Broadbent were re-elected to the PPC for a further three years. All the sidesmen were re-elected. Graham Dawson and Hilary BRoadbent were elected to team council. Philip Broadbent was re-elected PPC vice-chairman and Hilary Broadbent was re-elected PPC secretary/treasurer.
