A COMMUNITY has split over a controversial development.

Developer Conroy Brook has come under fire from some residents over its plans to build a retirement village on the site of Prickleden Mills, Holmfirth.

But other villagers have come out in support of the plan for the 46-unit retirement complex for people over 55.

The plan includes the demolition of a derelict bridge across the river Holme and the construction of a new bridge, which will allow vehicles to access the development from Lower Mill Lane.

Conroy Brook also hopes to restore the mill dam and build gardens on the site currently occupied by crumbling mills.

Holme Valley Parish Council rejected the Brockholes-based developer’s plans, but Kirklees councillors will have the final say on the proposal this summer.

And while neighbours of the site fear the development will increase traffic flows on Lower Mill Lane other Holmfirth villagers have backed Conroy Brook’s plan.

Frederick Hanwell, 82, said: “I had a heart attack at 8pm one evening and my wife didn’t know what to do.

“When you’re living with similar people you get the peace and quiet, the support, and kind of living that’s needed at my age.

“Holmfirth doesn’t have a lot to offer at the moment and that area is a bit run down.

Mr Hanwell, a great-grandfather, added: “I live in a bungalow and it’s getting a bit big for us. My wife is suffering with her back and we want to downsize.

“What’s needed is a home for people over 55 as opposed to moving into a block of flats where landlords rent them out to young people.”

Holmfirth greengrocer Andrew Bray said: “This is the kind of development we need – new accommodation for older people within easy, flat walking distance of the town centre shops. This sounds like good town planning to me”.
