Rise in 999 calls

West Yorkshire Police are receiving over a 1,000 additional 999 calls compared with this time last year - reflecting the national trend.

Tom Donohoe, Head of the Customer Contact Centre at West Yorkshire Police said factors such as the hot summer weather and excessive alcohol consumption can have an impact on call demand.

He reassured the public that all emergency calls will be dealt with and asked people to be patient or look at alternative contact options if their call is not an emergency.

He said: “At the moment, the West Yorkshire Police contact centre is receiving an extremely high volume of calls. Comparing the figures from this time last year, we have had up to an additional 1,000 calls a day which is huge leap in call volume.

“Despite additional call demand due to the warm weather, our average queuing time for 999 emergency number this week is between 7.5 and 8 seconds and we are working hard to reduce this even further.”

Local News:

West Yorkshire Police is paying increased attention to places of worship, in order to reassure our communities after the attack in Rouen, France.

While there is no specific intelligence relating to attacks against the Christian Community, in the UK or in West Yorkshire, police say that recent events in Europe and elsewhere may have made communities and individuals more concerned.

“We will be contacting religious establishments of all faiths, encouraging them to review their security arrangements. In addition, patrols will be paying increased attention to premises,” said Assistant Chief Constable Russ Foster.

“Terrorist activity is designed to create fear and disharmony within communities. The most effective way to keep our communities safe is to report incidents of hate, intolerance and extremism.

“By working together we can identify individuals of concern and intervene early. This could be by disrupting extremist speakers and denying them a platform, or through working with partners, such as Mental Health professionals, to address issues of vulnerability before they have an opportunity to escalate.

“Attacks such as the one we witnessed yesterday emphasise the need for communities to come together. There is no excuse for hate incidents or crimes and we will continue to take action against anyone guilty of committing hate crimes.”
