THE new tourist trails in Huddersfield are a classic case of forward-thinking groups getting together to replace a badly missed service that Kirklees Council is no longer providing.

Discover Huddersfield is a community-led project designed to tempt people into the town centre and show them there is a lot more there than just shops. It’s doing its best to replace the sorely missed tourist information centre.

Walking trails have been created by members of the public and will be shared through free trail maps and occasional guided walks.

And now they need volunteers to show people the way – quite literally – telling folk about the town’s vastly diverse heritage. This may be the first of several similar schemes to attract people into our area and, hopefully, it will inspire others to get involved.

For if we don’t do it for ourselves, no-one else will.
