Hundreds of railway enthusiasts set to descend on Mirfield

Fifth annual Mirfield Model Railway Exhibition to be held at St Mary's Parish Church

Model railway Exhibition at St. Mary's, Mirfield in 2013 - David Fallon, John Maughan and John Murphy with their Hornby Dublo layout.

Hundreds of model railway enthusiasts are set to descend on Mirfield on Saturday (May 17) for the fifth annual Mirfield Model Railway Exhibition.

Visitors come from across the country – and even abroad – to see some fascinating railway sets and displays.

Run by Peter and Jenny Dransfield, the exhibition now boasts a national following and people book to attend a year in advance.

This year’s exhibition will be held at St Mary’s Parish Church centre from 10am to 4pm.

Admission is £3.50 for adults and £2 for children.

This year there will be 15 railway layouts of various gauges as well as trade stalls, a raffle and refreshments.

One of the attractions will be a restored 4ft scale model of the Stornoway lifeboat, the Sir Hugh William Gough.

The model, featured in the Examiner last year, was painstakingly restored by expert modeller William Maskell.

Proceeds from the exhibition go to the church choir fund.

Last year 300 people attended and helped raise £1,200 for the Choir Guild.

At 3pm there will be an organ recital by Scott Senorgles, resident organist at the church.

One of last year’s raffle prize winners – from Spalding Moor – is coming back, to claim his train set prize!
